new build

I need help building a decent computer for under $380. I'm looking for something to play counterstrike source or team fortress on without getting any lags.

I already have:
-keyboard & mouse (usb, if that matters)
-an window XP, sp2

I'm not asking for anything fancy, I can live with onboard graphic, the only problem is which board is decent enough to play counter strike source?

Integrated video will not be enough for Counter-Strike: Source or Team Fortress 2.

$500.00 may be enough for a decent build.

you sure? Counter strike source is quite old, and there are some pretty good on board graphics out there now.

I still recommend increasing your budget a little more, rather than settling for really low end parts.

Yes it will...my friend plays CS:S on some high settings (dunno his exact configuration) out on some NVIDIA 7-series onboard and a single-core Athlon 64, and I've never seen it lag.

if i could send a PM i wouldn't be telling him this, but there's no other way to do so. i also can't post in the FS area.

That's because you need at least 100 posts to post in FS section - it's simply againist the rules to try and buy/sell anything here until you have the 100 posts.

That's very hard to believe. You sure it wasn't Counter Strike 1.6.

I tried playing on a Pentium D dual-core 2.8 GHz, 2GB of RAM, and a Radeon 2600 XT 512mb, and it was very choppy on high settings.

Yes. He did have a not-particularly-great CRT monitor though, so he might have had the resolution and some other settings down a little without me noticing it. He did say that he'd maxed out the settings, but thenagain he though that the expansion cards were RAM, constantly mixes up terms "hard drive" and "motherboard", and also asked me why his CPU wasn't running at fullspeed... (in system properties it said 2.00GHz and he didn't understand why it wasn't running at 2.4GHz even though he had a 240GB HDD...) The picture looked great w/o any lag all the same...
