New build

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and new to the world of building computers.

Basically as far as my knowledge goes I can put a computer together and know what components I need and that's about as far as it goes.

I would love to know your ideas on what components I should use to build the best quality desktop I can for my price range which is between £700 and £900

If you would like any more info just say. as I said I'm completely new to this so don't have much of a clue myself.

I would be grateful for any help/guidance :)

I may have chance of getting a brand new intel core i7-4790k on the cheap (in fact really cheap)
Because of this would you say it would be worth spending a little bit more and getting a gtx 780ti
Or would this mean I would have to change the rest of the components?
 
Hum I don't really know, in a few minutes veterans will come and help you out. Hum really cheap i7 maybe they are not as a same price amd cpu that can be better :) if you raise the 780 you will go above your budget, don't know if it is worth it. In my build Im using a power supply above what I need but that way I can upgrade or replace parts without worries. Last thing, if you are chenging the cpu don't forget to add a cooler :D

Hey, that's a familiar build! ;) This is pretty much your 'average £840 build', really.

Yeah that's the build I recommended to 'Spider' the other day. It's all good stuff but the power supply being 850W is perhaps a little over the top. A Corsair TX650 V2 would be fine.


If you can get an i7 4790K cheaply, by all means go for it - but you will need to get rid of the 900FXA-UD3 board in that list and replace it with a Z97 one instead.

With regards to cooling, if your i7 4790K doesn't come with a cooler then yeah you'll need to buy one. If you're buying it brand new and retail it will come with a cooler. Granted, it's a really pathetic one and not one you want to be overclocking with, but for running it at stock it will be fine.

If you have money to spare you can get the 780 Ti but the 780 is already a very fast card. I think there is quite a big price difference between the two.

I would also throw an SSD in there. You can get the Samsung 840 EVO 250GB for about £80-90 which will make all the difference to system responsiveness. I've used a lot of SSDs now and the 840 EVO is definitely the fastest. I get reads of 500+ MB/s and writes of 490MB/s in my laptop with it. Recommended! :good:

Well you have a decent aftermarket cooler, an unlocked processor and a good board, so yes because you will see a performance boost. :)
 
I'd really recommend getting a better CPU cooler for either options. Even if you don't intend to overclock. The stock ones will keep the temperatures much higher than even a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo would.

Edit: This (£30) would be much better. Those are much more expensive and rare here in DK, but they should be very good.
