New comp restart

Hey i just put together the comp you see in my specs and when i am playing world of warcraft i get excelent fps but sometimes the comp randomly just stops and the screen goes black and i have to hold in the power button for 4 seconds to turn it off then restart.
i have a few henches why this might be happening but not sure.
1. graphics card is overheating (stock coolers is piece of crap and when playing gets hott fast)
2. memory is bad ( but this only happens in games)
3. need to update bios ???

I've had a similar problem before where I would be playing a game and everything just went black. Sometimes the screen would turn all fuzzy first before it went black. It turned out that the fan on my video card had died so the GPU was overheating. I ended up replacing the fan and put some artic silver(thermal grease) on the GPU to keep it even cooler. I have an ATI card and in the advanced display settings there's an area that has the GPU temperature...there may be something similar for Nvidia drivers. If not, Im sure you can do a google search and find a program that will tell you the temperature. Good luck.

A bad power supply also causes similar problems...

RAM's pretty easy to check. Sometime(maybe when you go to bed) you can run some memtester and just let it go overnight. Try each chip seperately if possible...

As for the GPU, what temps has it reached? I mean my 6200 has gotten up to 70*C+(realize it has no fan) but I've yet to have any problems with it *knock on wood...*

thanks

i found my temp settings in the drivers and its only getting up to 64-67 degrees celcius. soo i wonder could it also be my powersupply. but i paid good money for it so it should be good. im still thinking it might be my memory but how do i check that

Make sure you're checking the temp when you're playing a game. Mine ran fine when I wasnt then I checked when I was playing a game it got up to 90C (luckily it still works).

If you want to check to see if it's the power supply, try unplugging any extra hard drives or optical drives and see if it still does the same thing.

To test the memory just run a memtest like The_Other_One said. Not sure where you can find one though.

well i checked temp as fast as i could i would alt tab then look at my drivers so that is as close as i can get to checking it while playing it. and i only have one optical drive and one hard drive so there is not to much to unplug

well if you want to check your memory i would suggest these two programs, http://www.memtest86.com/
or go download prime 95, prime 95 has a niffty feature that will use maximum power consumption if i remember right and that might help you out in figuring out the problem, also look on your motherboard and make sure you don't have any bubbling capacitors.

ok im going to try a memory test tonight and i have noticed the game is only doing it in WoW. i have been playing oblivion and Cod2 fine except for one time when i got the blue screen of death in Cod2 . i am going to reinstall wow and see what happens

Well it just did the same thing in Oblivion so im going to run the mem test. how could i test my psu?

what are the specs on the PSU? that may cause a problem with the video card, if its doesnt have enough amperage... the card and/or cpu may not get enough power and freeze or something...
this it?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817163109
that has 4*12V rails it should be fine... lol but it still might cause issues just because theres a 12V with 8A which is kind of low... i mean what if its trying to power the GPU and the CPU with that rail alone... probly not but hey who knows.
my uncles 420W has a 12V @ 13A (just built)
you can test you psu by running prime95 memtest and 3dmark06 all at once :D
if it freezes while you're running all three, but not while running them individually, then its the PSU most likely. also, if you have another system you could test it using that.

OK thanks for the tip ill try it, i just got off memtest86 for 7 hours and no errors. i guess my memory is fine. im going to do what u said and run max power and see what happens. i bought the graphics card used on ebay and this might be the reason why theguy was selling it??
oh yeah that is my psu the one you have a link to.
P.S. how do you run all those tests at the same time???
