Hello first-time poster, for any help or advice added in, it will be appreciated.Forwarding into my story :

PART A

Well I've had my computer for about 3 Months now, & about 1 week ago my computer wasn't able to start. I'd press the power button, I'd hear the fan and all but the power button wasn't lit on at all. No display on the screen at all but it sounded like something was trying to run and it failed. I then clicked the power button which was not lit and oddly it just shutdown. After a couple of tries, it turns on but the quality of the load up is chopped up and not normal.

So then I let it go and it failed. Then a couple hours later I tried 3 times did the same thing as the 1st problem. After the next try it turns on, and it looks like brand new. The computer says that it had been shut down due to some graphic card problem. Then the computer offered me 4 options. Such as downloading 3rd party drivers or something like that. Then 3 to do with the Graphic Card. I did a serch up for possible drivers with the computer manually not on any website, and it said that it should be up to date.

But I went through with the graphic card operation and they sent me to some manufacture's website with all kind of graphic cards and their avialable options. I'd look through into mine, i'd get the driver update. Installed the program, with the proper driver update & after I downloaded it. It loaded up some kind of ATi program. I runed the driver update and then it failed due to some kind of disk space memory error. Ever since then i've been stuck. And the last 3 days it hasn't done any of these error's. I'm not sure if I courrupted my graphic card, or any damage to it.

Since the driver upload failed, im concered if my graphic card is harmed in any way due to a failure in the update.

Then I was told it possible could be some kind of hardware failure.

Then i went onto PART B

VGA driver. Is that a back-up driver or something. I'll have to look into that because yesturday I went through recent problems reports and solutions and I saw that in my history there was STANDARD VGA GRAPHICS ADAPTER problem with the description of not being able to load driver software on 3/12/09. Ever since then there's been (WINDOWS) problems such as shut down unexpectedly & video hardware problem over 40 problems since 3/12/09

Seems like ever since there was a driver installed on 03/12/09 there been lots of problems.

I've also realized today because it didn't start 3 times, is that it only work when you hear a dot sound. Then everything loads up. Some kind of mechanical dot.

I'm pretty sure I have warrenty with the store so i'm wondering if I should go ahead and return the computer for a new one. But then again I want to learn something out of this experiance.

Conclusion I've got a couple of options. Doing more background research on graphic card errors/driver updates, driver failures and symptoms with solutions. Getting advice from this website and 1 other. And finally returning the Desktop back.

"Address a problem with ATI Graphics Driver
ATI Graphics Driver has stopped working properly.

A driver update, if available, might prevent this problem from recurring.

There are several ways of locating and installing driver updates, but it is best to let Windows do this for you. Try the first step below, which describes the process. If it doesn't produce a driver update that solves the problem, then try the remaining steps in the order given.

Check for optional third-party updates

Even if all critical updates have been installed on your computer, optional updates might be available for ATI Graphics Driver that have yet to be installed. Here's how to use Windows Update to check for and install optional driver updates:

Click to go online to the Windows Update website

In the left pane, click Check for updates to see if there are any optional updates available for your computer.

If no new optional updates are available, go to step 2.

If optional updates are available, click View available updates (if you do not see this option, you might have to click Check online for updates from Microsoft Update).

Windows Update or Microsoft Update will list any updated drivers that are available for devices installed in your computer.

Select any optional updates that are listed (especially if they appear to be graphics related), and then click Install. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Try updating ATI Graphics Driver manually

If no optional ATI Graphics Driver updates were available in Windows Update, you can try updating ATI Graphics Driver manually.

Note
It's best to let Windows install drivers for your hardware automatically, as described in step 1 above.

If you decide to manually update ATI Graphics Driver, here's how to do it:

Click to open Device Manager If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

In Device Manager, double-click Display adapters, and then double-click the name of the device running ATI Graphics Driver.

Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

When asked how you want to search for driver software, click Search automatically for updated driver software.

Windows will locate and install a new driver if one is available.

Check the ATI Technologies, Inc. website for driver updates

If no optional ATI Graphics Driver updates were available in Windows Update, go online to the following website to check for driver updates:

Click to go online to the ATI Technologies, Inc. website to find out if a solution or update is available
How to manually update a driver using a downloaded file

Click to open Device Manager If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

In Device Manager, locate the device you want to update, and then double-click the device name.

Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

When asked how you want to search for driver software, click Browse my computer for driver software.

Click Browse, locate where you placed the new driver on your computer, click OK, and then click Next. Windows will locate and install the new driver.

Note
If you are running the latest version of ATI Graphics Driver and are still experiencing the problem, we recommend that you contact ATI Technologies, Inc. or the manufacturer for additional information and support.

Check your computer manufacturer's website for driver updates

Sorry but I gotta rebump this thread as I've gotten the same error. I was wondering If manufacturer driver updates could have updates from ATi aswell. Because I went to my man. website and I did believe that I saw some VGA driver video card update. As far as downloading the driver from ATi, I really don't know how to do it appropriately. So I was wondering where should I start off from ? & I believe I did do an upgrade once, but I wasn't sure if it was legit, and then the driver update left my hanging due to some insufficient memory of some sort. Here is the driver version update for Window Vista x64 Home Edition ---- > ATi Radeon HD 4870 ------> 9-11_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc

Alright I went with the 1st Option. And btw when your updating drivers, in this case the graphic driver, do I have to uninstall the previous driver and then install this one or what?

I'm really lost with driver updates and not sure what I have to succed before & during the driver update

________EDIT________

As far as graphic card updates, I went through Device Manager and went into my gsu options, trhough properties, I let the computer do the research automatically and it said the driver should be up to date or something in those terms.

For that driver update I did manually [ 9-11_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc ] Should I uninstall the program and all of its files ?

Alright now to jump back into the site you just sent me. I have the same Catalyst Instsall manager, but a different version. So far the download has gone farther than the version I got myself. It usually failed at the Mircosoft C+++ step which is like the very beginning. Now that the download finished. I've got to reboot the computer and we'll see what happens thanks. Hope I didnt get to complicated

Alrighty,

It took me 5 hours to turn on the computer.

Start up Repair failed - 5 Times

My computer couldn't even do a system recovery.

And now I believe this could be the last time im on this computer before I return it. What could be causing the problem? Lack in computer maintenance ? Or some kind of Drive Failure. I want to know because it really leaves me so confussed when I let things just move on, no matter if the task is completed or not.

I am wondering If I need to re update my computer afte a sytem restore or what ever you call it. So far it's backed up to the point where it runned clean. And now im wondering If I should be going to my man. website and downloading all of their available drivers ?

Sounds like you better just return it. If you did a system recovery then you would most likely need to do all updates, however all drivers should already be installed except for any hardware bought after the fact.
