Hello

I just put together my new computer but when i turn it on - it boots form the hard drive, it gets to the windows logo and then restarts - i have tried the computer with two different hard drives and both do the same - does any one know why (they were both ID harddrives)

Is this XP that was installed on another computer try a repair install, boot the xp cd and follow through till you get to this page and hit R

The thing is is that both my old hard drive (xp) and my new hard drive (vista) work with other machines - but they both retart when the windows logo appears in the new machine - i dont think re installing would help - but then i heard that the opertaing system has to be re installed if using in a different machine - is this correct??

In a word yes, Windows checks all the hardware on start-up and if there is a significant difference, which there is here, then XP won't boot.

Well im going from a 5 year old computer with a pentium 2ghz CPU and not much ram and nothing else spectacular to a dual core amd is quite a big leap - do you think this is my problem ?

Because i would hate to have to loose vista now that i have it all set up perfectly with all my wanted programs etc...

true, but it loads into the xp welcome screen and gives you a message that says why it won't boot and gives you the option of reactivating

also, you should always reinstall windows when moving it to a new computer, especially if there's a large difference not only will it run better but you'll also experience less errors like this one
