New computer for cheap

My friend wants a very cheap computer. All he needs is a processor, motherboard with integrated video and a PCI express slot, memory, case, and PSU. He would like at least 512MB of ram.

His budget is $230 MAX, less is better. If an item has a rebate, the price will be the rebate price and not the original price. Multiple sites can be used, but shipping will be included in the overall price

A great place for motherboard/cpu deals is tigerdirect. I would like him to get a Athlon 64 socket 939. Any suggestions?

EDIT: I was thinking about this motherboard/cpu, since it has integrated 6100 graphics to hold him.

If he lives in the US or can at least buy from newegg.com, that would be cheaper I think. Chiefvalue is also right around the same price as Newegg.

I would recommend a sempron 2800+ ($45) or 3000+ ($55) processor. He could probably go AM2 as well. The ~$65 Asrock AM2 motherboard would work well. (has integrated graphics I believe, 6100) Possibly the Logisys Area 51 case or an Athenatech (half-decent psu's included), etc for around $50 shipped. (could also get say a ~$25-$40 psu and buy some dirt cheap case from somewhere) 512mb of ram would run you around $30-45 depending on what you got (of course I'm figuring in your budget for the prices).

Should be able to build an amazing setup for the price. I think a lot of people would be surprised.

Example of what you could do, or similar:

processor - Sempron 3000+ skt AM2 (~$55)
motherboard - Asrock xxxxx skt AM2 (~$65)
memory - Kingston DDR2 533Mhz (~$40)
case + psu - Logisys Area 51 (~$55)

Total: ~$215

Prices are estimates, some above would be the shipped price, others might have to put shipping on top of listed price. For the above setup though, it would be under $230 I'm sure...and that's with the Sempron 3000+. The needs of integrated video and PCIe slot would be achieved as well.

Regardless of whether or not your friend can buy from Newegg or not, that he should do some searching of his own there based on suggestions from myself and others. The majority of the THOUSANDS of components Newegg sells have many reviews from people that might give you some good info. Good luck, and my apologies for my horribly organized and rambling post.

Rambling posts are better than none at all. Wouldn't the cpu/mobo combo be better than the cpu and motherboard that you picked out? Even though it has a rebate.

He told me that he was looking for more in the $150 range. A celeron D motherboard with integrated graphics and 512MB of memory is around $125 while the 3200+ and motherbard with 6100 integrated graphics and 512MB memory is $145. Which one would be the better deal?

what celeron d? most likely the sempron

I would stick with the motherboard combo that he picked out. Since he can get an Athlon 64 3200+ (retails for $99 on newegg), and a decent motherboard all for $99. While your sempron and asrock mobo/cpu combo costs $120, and isnt as good.
