New computer help :)

Hello boys and girls of all ages.
A new member here :)

My 19th birthday is coming up and I'm getting a brand new computer.
I gotta however choose the hardwares I wish and I have no idea where to search to get the info on graphic cards, sound cards ... let me just put it this way, I know what I want the computer for but I have no idea where to go from there :).

So I was wondering if anyone here could help me here ?
Also, the most important question from the guy who'd be putting the PC together for me, was which operating system I'd like, cause that defines which games and softwares will run on my PC and which hardware will be fitting.

Windows Vista looks really awesome, but I guess, that being fairly new on the market, not much is optimized for it, correct ?

And - thanks for all your help ;)

Heh happy birthday and welcome to CF, if you live in the usa newegg is probably your best choice to get the parts from, if you can tell us what's your budget we might help you by suggesting builds/improving them

Hi,
no I don't live in the USA but that's really not a problem. I haven't gotten a budget either, I just want a computer that's gonna be fit for a few years without much upgrading.

I want it for general every day use, music production and gaming. So nothing special really. I've done some reasearch and it seems that most of the games and softwares (even old ones) run on Windows Vista, which was my biggest dilemma, correct ?
And as for other details, the guy mentioned that the graphic card was gforce (i think) 7600gs ... dont remember what kind, but he mentioned 2 procecors, 160 I think ? :P (sorry Im just dumb at computers)

I'm a newbie here as well. First off, Happy Birthday! I just completed my first "assisted" computer build and am very happy with the results. I would say the homework in which components you are going to work with is the most important feature in building a computer. What works together and what doesnt work together. I have been browsing this forum and see a wealth of information as well as seeing a wealth of people who know their computer stuff.

If budget is not an issue...try my setup seen in my signature. I am quite sure there will be those on here that will scrutinize my build, but I can tell you that it is the fastest computer I have ever owned. I am not that big on PC games, as I have P3 and Xbox 360. However, I do have Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 installed on my computer using the Zboard and the graphics are outstanding.

Good Luck on your build...and lets us know what you end up with.

If your budget doesn't matter, then awsome! And you'll like to have general entertainment pc, playing games and musics....

Since you are "dumb" (as you described, no offense hehe :P), I wouldn't recommend you to build a computer from scratch.

So the conclusion is to buy it from custom computer companies or just like HP, etc.

List of Custom Company:
Cyberpowerpc.com
Ibuypower.com
Alienware.com (expensive)
Voodoopc.com (HARDCORE CRAZY GAMING and of course, EXPENSIVE)

List of General Company (Not custom)
HP
SONY
Dell (you can kind of customize in online store....if you were to choose this brand, I would recommend XPS 7 series or just don't buy rest of theirs)
Gateway
Compaq
etc.

Any useful to you? :)
