New computer...in a way...

OK, I guess I'll post what's going on with me... Some of you might of noticed I removed my signature soon after getting my new Epox board. Why? Because the damn thing still gave me as many or more problems than the old Abit! Realize, this was a new case, video card, harddrive, power supply, and keyboard... Something major was up or I was having real problems with compatability...

Anyway... I just puchased a prebuilt Compaq and today is the first day I came home to use it. Obviously, it's 6200 isn't NEARLY as powerful than my old 7800GT or 6800GT, but it works well enough for me. Plus, this gives me a good amount of money to purchse another computer in the near future to keep at least the processor and all up to date. New computer equals happy me :D

So yeah, laugh at my downgrade if you want, I'm just pleased that it works(or seems to so far!)

Yeah...perhaps it was a bad processor... Both mothboards would reset when I would play Need For Speed Most Wanted, Epox actually ended up being worse than the Abit. The RAM was good, I ran tests on it a while back and it passed flawlessly... I had 3 different PCIe video cards, all did similar things. Reloaded, new harddrives(with and without raid) Ugh...

My new outlook on computers, don't get the best...don't even get CLOSE! How things are anymore, you get screwed half the time and spend a good bit. My previous machine was $1800 plus my LCD. This machine was $600(no monitor), and really isn't THAT much weaker(aside from the 6200 rather than the 6800 I got on the other machine)

It can play Need For Speed MW and Second Life just fine, so I can manage

Alot of OEM computers arent that bad anymore, since you can get a fairly decent computer for around $400, and its great for normal use, and some come with the nVidia 6100 Integrated, which isnt the best but its pretty good for integrated.

eww a compaq? I dunno if they still do it but I had an old compaq and they had parts that weren't on normal computers so if you wanted to replace anything or upgrade anything you would have to buy the part directly from them. The one i had (well I still have it but its in pieces) had this extra slot with some sort of memory or something in it that other old computers that I had laying right next to it had nothing like it but i guess its better than nothing.

i agree compaq sucks.
well i saw one that doesn't make any noise though,,,
Compaq's used to suck, granted there not the best out there, but there not horrible. I prefer HP though because of their looks over compaq, even though there pretty much the same machine.

OMEGA - Yes, OEM's are getting a bit better than they used to be. I know my grandparent's HP was about this same price a few years ago and it's total crap(always has been...) This one so far is fairly decent and should do what I want.

Lamilia / Charles - Computers have gotten away from using propriatary parts, for the most part... Everything in this machine seems to be fairly basic from what I can see so far. But I know what you mean. My parents and grandparents both had a Compaq a while back. I'm quite sure everyone's away from this now due to profits. I mean which is cheaper. Use something that's the same for ANY computer, or have someone make something just for you?

As for how they suck, again, in a way, they aren't "compaq" so much anymore. I mean my grandparents HP has a FIC motherboard. This one appears to be(beat this) Asus ;)

Oh yeah, specs if anyone's wondering...
AMD Athlon 64 3700 San Diego(1M Cache)
Asus Amberine(ATI chipset...blah...)
1024M DDR3200
80G Seagate SATA
DVD-RW DL
Geforce 6200 TC(better than onboard)

well. i just remembered compaq laptop, where my friend's laptop broke, and they would charge him like $400 to repair...
well i just don't like built computers anymore.
i like building from the scratch.
its fun and i get to learn more abou it

I'm just down after all the problems I had with mine, but I do prefer to build from scratch...

As for the laptop, most any would be expensive and require propriatary parts, so that's no big suprise to me really. Most any laptop would probably end up costing close to that much to repair. BUT, Compaq is good with their warrenty. my bro's compaq laptop's harddrive died. They sent a box, paid for it to be shipped to and from the warehouse, and repared it for free while it was under warrenty.

Here's the best in all it's glory. I must say it's pretty well made. All the ports fell very secure, the case is very solid, everything fits nicely and is very tight. My other cases were good, but I don't know, this one feels more snug than those others. Even the old Dells I worked on at the shop felt better than some of these cases I've purchased...

Anyway, get used to this compy because I'm stuck with it for a few years ;)
