New Computer Shorting all my Keyboard/Mouse

Built a new computer today and started it up. First thing i noticed was that the brand new keyboard i ordered online wasn't working. Mouse was fine so i assumed the keyboard was just broken and got another one and this one worked so i began to installed OS and updated bios / drivers for my motherboard and GPU. Then i surfed the web a bit everything was good until i turned it off to move it to my room. When i restarted the computer things seemed normal, then i noticed a weird burning smell and right away the mouse and keyboard were not working. I instantly turned off the PC and inspected everything in the case, nothing was emitting the burning smell. But it was the mouse. After that i tried 2 other keyboards and mouse and they all didnt respond / stopped working even when i tried it on my laptop.

All Keyboards and mouse are USB

Case - Cool Master
Motherboard - Asus M5A97 Evo
RAM - 4GB (2x2GB)
CPU - AMD FX-4100 Quad
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1GB
PSU - Cool Master Extreme Power Plus 700w

Did you use the brass standoffs between the motherboard and case? Also did you check to make sure that the I/O backplate didn't have any metal pieces extending inside the usb ports?

The case came with those Yellow/orange colored things that were flat and had screw holes in it so i dont think thats the problem, thats what i placed my Motherboard on following the instructions from the manual

The faceplate originally had weird prongs sticking out perpendicular to the plate itself on the back side where the Motherboard would be. Was i supposed to keep bending them until they came off? I pretty much just bent them back into place but they seem to be touching some of the ports but only the outside of the housing. If that makes sense.

Update

Plugged in a none USB keyboard and started up, worked for a bit then becomes none responsive, also tried a different USB mouse, I keep getting weird driver downloads im assuming is for the mouse and that i should restart my computer for it to work. So after a few restarts the mouse works but the keyboard isnt, then the mouse also dies.

I'm not sure whats going on here. The tabs on the I/O plate should be left on the plate, just make sure they aren't bent inward to where they go inside any of the usb, network ports.

As far as those yellow and orange things... can you give us a picture of them? What coolermaster case do you have?

Yes, those are the brass standoffs. Did you use 9 stand offs and only put them where a screw is required on the motheboard? I have the 912 as well, its a great case.

Remove the one that didn't have the screwhole. You are grounding out the motherboard.

I actually had 2 extra standoffs under the motherboard that were unused. I took them off but is my motherboard damaged? I dont have another mouse to test since it already burned 3 of them out....

It's very possible that you have damaged the motherboard. I would get a cheap mouse just to test.

if the motherboard is damaged is it safe to turn it on? As far as i can tell it runs, but starting up windows does seem to take a bit longer then i'd expect from a new build.

If i have it on will it break other things or make the damage on the board itself worse?

Already removed.

Have my mouse plugged in right now, seems to be working just fine(Plugged into the front), gonna restart and plug into the back.

~EDIT~
Ok seems to be working now, but it takes over a minute for my computer to boot up to desktop. Is that normal even though its a newly built computer?

Is there any way for me to check to see if my motherboard is damaged?

Sorry, didn't see that you edited your post. You might want to try a system restore or maybe try reinstalling windows now that the extra standoffs are out. If it still acts funny then you have motherboard issue.

No, something is wrong if the tempreture is high. What's high to you? Because if it's too hot, that will definitely cause some problems. Double check the fan and the coolant on the CPU, you may need to replace the coolant.

Also, I know this might sound like useless because it's new, but check your processes, you may want to reduce the amount of processes on your computer (cntrl + alt + delete to view this). By the way you have been describing these problems, it sounds like you may have received some faulty parts. I would contact the seller and start making enquiries, once you know that you have done everything correctly. It just doesn't sound very normal to me.

You may want to make sure that you didn't pick up any adaware or viruses if you have used the computer to access the internet or downloaded or installed anything that was from the internet or an infested computer on the new computer.

whats the processor utilization at that temp? That seems to be about right at 100% utilization. If its just idle, then you got problems.

Thats the idle temp. Soon as turn on the computer it idles at mid 40C, if i want to watch videos or play games it goes up to 60C+

I also changed the thermal paste this morning and its still like this. Is it the motherboard causing the problems?

Does it make a difference that i used Artic Silver 5 Thermal Paste? According to their site it takes up to 200 hours to break in the compound for you to see the lowest temps. Should i wait it out?

That temp is high. Are you sure you got the heatsink on right? It's possible you have motherboard damage now.
