New Computer

I'm building a new computer and need advice on what parts to buy. I'm going to be using it for things like solid works, matlab, etc. I'd also like it to be able to run some decent games. I have a budget of $1200. If absolutely necessary I can spend about $1400. I prefer intel procs and nvidia gpu's. Any suggestions would be great. thanks.

hmmm, nvidia gtx 275 is a good card for the price... you could get better performance with the cheaper radeon 4890... wait for the i5 to come out...

There is nothing wrong with the computer you have now all it needs is a GPU and RAM upgrade and you should probably switch to windows 7.

I'm building this one for my roommate. His is 5 years old. I'm keeping my current computer shown in the signature still.

So far, i've noticed that the mobo needs to go because i need more then 4 memory slots. So what's a good equivalent motherboard? An OS isn't needed either so keep that in mind when picking parts.

does anyone see any other problems with it or anything that can be improved on?

Thanks

Video card, single 4870 1GB @ $145, 4870 x2 @ $360. Since the motherboard support crossfire, two 4870 1GB in CF would be cheaper...
If you have $360 for video card, I recommend a single GTX275/ 4890 to start with. If you feel it is not good enough, get a second card for CF/ SLi, which end up ~$400 with lots better performance than 4870 x2

Mobo - as mentioned previously. If you want a cheaper one, get Foxconn Renaissance.

HDD: Get Seagate 7200.12/ WD Caviar Black

I agree a 4890 will out preform a 4870 x2 in most games because not all games can utilize multiple graphics cards. The Seagate 7200.11 hard drives have a pretty high failure rate and western digital caviar black or the Seagate 7200.12 will be much better. Also I think you should pick your on case unless you actually like that one but there are a lot better ones out there.

From my memory, 4890 pair up with 4850 x2...

Yes that is right but I never said a 4870 x2 was better then a 4890. I only said a 4890 will preform better in most games compared to a 4870 x2 because most games will on use one of the two GPU's. You already know a 4890 beats a 4870. If the game uses both of the 4870s in the 4870 x2 then of course it would stomp the 4890. From my experience a single good card is always better. In the future more games will be able to utilize multiple graphics cards until then it is pretty useless to have more then one.
