The grand total for all of this is just over $700 usd. Monitor, keyboard, mouse, OS isn't included of course. Not sure of your needs in those areas. Below I'll go through why I picked each component, etc.
case - This Antec case I really like the looks of, plus it's supposed to be quiet & it comes with a very solid 450 watt psu, unlike most cases. (crappy psu's) Extremely good value for the money considering the psu alone costs around $60 usd.
mobo - This one seemed to be the best bang for the buck mobo that also fit my needs. I need one with integrated video since I'll be buying the 6600gt a little after the rest of my system. The msi k8ngm2-fid is very similar, but sports more features and a higher pricetag. MSI mobos seem to be very respectable, stable, and relatively problem-free compared to some similar, newer Asus ones.
video card - For my price range ($100-140), the 6600gt is most likely the highest performer. Also considered to be among the highest video cards out today in terms of price to performance ratio. SLI is also an option with this card, however I don't plan on utilizing it myself.
cpu - The amd 3200+ venice core is one of the best amd cpu's you can buy price/performance wise, along with the 3700+ san diego. I chose the 3200+ primarily due to finances, although if I had $60 more to spend, I would probably choose the sd. The 3200+ is also considered to be a great overclocker, especially with the E3 stepping model. Excellent upgrade path with skt 939 (for now).
memory - For some reason I chose Kingston, pretty much whatever you pick should work fine. The ram I picked is about as cheap as you can get, fairly slow however. (relatively) Make sure your motherboard supports the ram you pick.
floppy drive - It's a floppy drive, enough said.
hard drive - You may want more than 80gb of hdd space, I don't need a whole lot though. Western Digital seems to be a quality, respectable brand although several brands are also considered as such. Depends on the person. I chose a Sata drive since my motherboard supports it.
cd/dvd - Pretty self explanatory, with what I picked I can burn CDs or DVDs. Can of course also be used to view regular CDs or DVDs. Not as fast as say a regular CDRW drive, I might pick up one of those later on for gaming, etc.
Please keep in mind I am no expert whatsoever in terms of computer hardware, however I have read/researched quite a bit and feel the above setup will work very well for me, with my budget. A lot might change come July/August though. Who knows, maybe you will use 1 or more of my components as a base for your own build. Good luck.

Not looking at each component spec too closely, I think it all looks pretty good. I would consider stepping up to a 3700+ San Diego cpu however, if you're going for the 3500+ anyway. The extra 512 L2 cache on the SD for an extra $10 or so (for now anyway)...is a bargain.
I really am not the person to go to in situations/questions like these, personally I recommend Praetor, he is indeed an expert in this area.
