Hey guys/gals,

Well, I am finally getting cable internet. Yeah, I know.. hold your applauds. Anyways, the service available for me is cable internet provided by adelphia/time warner. However, never having cable internet prior, I am not sure if I should go with the self install kits with the modem and all, or just get a whole new modem elsewhere. In short, I need a modem with wireless capabilities so I can get on it via wifi also. I am sure I will need to pay a little more for it, right? If anyone is already on adelphia, please give me some insight and info on it. Thx.

I was wandering if any other modem I can get off elsewhere better and more capable for what I want; not saying the one provided by adelphia is bad...

Additionally, I am not sure how it works, but if anyone can help me on this, it'll be great! Difference in cable and dsl? Is cable setup throug the cable line in the phone? as opposed to dsl? or they all the same. Reason because our cable line is downstairs, and I want to be able to directly connect to it, but the room is upstairs. Thanks.
 
Cable is shared bandwidth that goes through your tv cable line. Everyone on your grid (in other words the entire neighborhood) shares the bandwidth. At peak times your bandwidth can drop considerably.

DSL goes through your phoneline. It is dedicated bandwidth. Unfortunately where I live I am too far away from the switch and my DSL service sucked, so I was forced to switch over to cable.
 
With a good cable setup the often heard "Yahoooo" and "Yee haaa" is for the "instantaneous" connect to whatever. Supposedly you will see a far speedier service with the higher and faster bandwidth there. ANY! service can get "bogggggeddddd ddddowwwnn" when a rushing herd of users arrive.

So either way, I'm getting a modem from them right? If so, any thoughts on which one?
 
I happen to be a Motorola fan but Scientific-Atlanta is also a good name. The two models I might end up with cable ever shows up here are
Motorola SB5120 or Scientific-Atlanta DPC2100 :)
 
OK, one last thing.. Can I just get any wireless capable modem off the market such as a linksys or other because adelphia unfortunately does not have any wireless capable modems in their plans.
 
I can't believe they would make you lease a modem, the cheeky bastards. I wouldn't put up with that. Tell them if they want your business they'll just up and give you a modem. Cable gave me a Motorola. Now they're bugging me for my TV and phone business, so I'm negotiating with them on that. Believe me if they want your business (that is, if there is competition), they'll usually bend over backwards to get it.

The Rogers guy is doing that for me right now. He's trying to squeeze them for extra goodies and he's going to call me back. He really wants my business.
 
If you can get another modem running good tell them you don't need the extra charge on the monthly bill. That generally should be only a small portion of the bill since they have to provide you one in order to see a working connection if you don't have already as part of the service. But if the one you buy craps you are stuck. With "their's" they have to provide you with a replacement automatically as part of the contract. 20 of them can crap out but they still have to replace them as part of the lease agreement.
 
Anyone know of a good wireless cable modem on the market?
Talked with them and they finally took off the modem so I would need a modem. Thanks.

So far, I've seen 3 that I like:
D-Link DI-624
Belkin 54g Cable/DSL Gateway Router
Linksys WRT54GS

This will be for a home setup, so the best possible wireless throughput would be nice. Any other modems I am not aware of?
 
I am a linksys fan as I have had issues with d-link. But it is different with different people. I use a linksys wireless router here but have a motorola surfboard cable modem.
 
I have DSL, but a good friend has Adelphia for his internet. He tells me that during the day it is fast, but in the evening it slows down considerably. Then after midnight its fast again.

Hope you don't plan to run Counter Strike: Source with the Linksys router. That has been seeing a number of problems lately.

That soounds like some people decided to log on and off on a regular schedule of some type. Maybe they have to get up in the morning for some reason. Who knows?! :P

Peak time for ANY internet service, in the US or Canada for that matter, is during the evening hours. No matter where you go in North America you will find that cable speeds drop during those hours thanks to sharing the bandwidth with the whole neighborhood.
