New CPU and Mobo possibly? phenom and..

Hey guys, i recently bought a 4870 and am not that happy with the performance, in crysis warhead i cop some lags and on 3d mark only get about 11.5k marks so i'm upgrading my CPU and possibly motherboard and probably PSU

specs:
Asus EAH 4870 DDR5 512mb etc
Thermaltake 440W PSU (GPU isn't having any power supply issues somehow)
AMD 6000+ CPU dual core
4 GB ram.. 386.3 mhz and it's in dual channel.. think DDR3?
Asus M2n-SLI motherboard

Now what i want to know is if one of the newish Phenom ATI CPU's will run well on this motherboard? I couldn't find any info, but did read that a few people needed to flash theirs to get them working ;o

Also does anyone know if the EAH 4870 uses 16X PCI-E? Or is it 32X? I believe my motherboard is only 16X :S

Your ram is DDR2 can't run DDR3

X2 4870 I believe is 2x16 so 32x 2.0.....a single 4870 is x16 2.0 though (someone confirm)

Your board supports x16 so its not 2.0...its also 8x8 on SLI which could be why your seeing crappy performance.
I went from a x16 to a x16 2.0 and my GPU runs about 6c hotter and I get better performance from it then I use too.

So id look to upgrade your board. Depending on your budget get a board that can handle a 9950 Phenom.
If you really want a phenom that is or you can get a 9850 phenom which is .100mhz slower but about 15 bucks cheaper.


Sadly I can't find the CPU support for your board...its like ASUS deleted it.

So the board cant run DDR3? Thats a bit of a pain.. could have sworn i bought DDR3.. It's no biggy really though, the loading of stuff is not really a problem, any jumpiness etc is in gameplay, usually when theres too many people around

About the PCI-E thing, are u saying that because it can run on 8X (when it's in SLI mode) it may have defaulted from 16X to 8X or may not be changing the value correctly? It's supposed to run 16X on single card mode right?

I was looking at anything Phenom TBH, i've read a number of people with my 6000+ and card are getting not-so-great performance so phenom was the way i wanted to head.. although i could always go intel i suppose if this motherboard won't support it

I don't think my motherboards more than 6 months (??) old, so it's weird that theres no compatibility listing.. i couldnt find one myself lol, thanks for the help

You have a PCIe 1.1 slot. Running a 4870 you (might) get a performance hit. As far as running a Phenom on your AM2 board, you will lose some HT speed. The AM2 boards are limited to 1000/2000. And some bios setting available on AM2+ boards. All AMD boards right now are limited to DDR2. DDR3 boards will not be here till AM3 boards are released the first next year, And DDR3 will only work with AM3 processors.

The info on your board at Asus is pretty easy to find, dont know why is was so hard for anyone to find?

yeh about that.. i'm not sure why but i was looking on the diamond website for a m2ne sli.. lol, my last mobo was diamond so brain wasn't working

Thanks for clearing that up about DDR3.. i assumed they were up to like ddr 5 on mobo's because my graphic card had it hehe

So looks like i'm up for a mobo and CPU and PSU, which is a bit of a pain because i only bought this one about 6 months ago but oh well..

Do you guys reckon the upgrade will be very noticeable on gaming or in windows navigation? atm my windows nav is pretty slow (just reinstalled windows to try speed it up.. must just be windows) I'm hoping for better all around tbh but if it's only gonna be 1-2 FPS max then..

The only Phenom worth upgrading to would be the 9850/9950 but not for sure your board would support the 125W processors. Or the Phenom 8750BE, have read it clocks to 2.9/3.0 pretty easy.

If you want to stay with AMD I would wait, the Deneb is going to be released in a month or so with 2 AM2+ models. Get a good AM2+ board with a Phenom II X4 920 2.8ghz. or a Phenom II X4 940BE 3.0ghz. Plus if you dont want to go with a Phenom II, I would say the bottom will drop out on the price of the existing Phenoms after the II is released.
