so i got a bios upgrade from e-support.com, which was supposed to add hyper threading support, and let me use up to a 3.06 northwood 478 P4. i install the cpu, and first the video card screen comes up, then it displays the processor info, and it hangs. i have tried a bunch of times. is the processor bad? i did buy it used. what else could the problem be?

it does not even boot up enough to be able to hit DEL or F1. currently i am using a 2.8 in it, and it works perfectly, this only happens when i try and use the 3.06. how do i clear the CMOS memory?

unplug it from the wall and then look for the batter, pop the battery out for about 30 seconds and then put it back in

there should be a jumper on your motherboard for the cmos, you'll need to change the jumpers but im not sure to which pins.

Try restting the CMOS as suggested. If it still won't work, I'd stick the old processor back in and be sure it's compatable/working/nothing got messed up. It's probably also worth checking the processor was seated properly in the socket(usally doesn't happen but sometimes they won't go all the way down...)

ya i actually just got it, this pc was bought in costco about 3 years ago, it is made by MEDION, so i didnt have the motherboard book. another question, the pc has a built in card reader, for pretty much all formats. if i boot the computer up, it will not find it, if i boot it with a card in it, it will show up. this is probably from the bios upgrade correct?

so i cleared the cmos. now the computer will not start up at all with the new processor installed. before i cleared the bios, it would at least display the processor type then hang. any ideas?
