New CPU or new PC?

Hi guys,

Here are the specs of my pc at the moment:

AMD Athlon X2 4800+ 2.50GHz AM2
4GB DDR2 800
Nvidia 9800GT
Samsung 1TB sata HDD
24" 1080p monitor

Fresh install of Windows 7

I have recently noticed that its starting to struggle doing anything more then basic tasks even after a reinstall. I recently purchased the Settlers 7 and this runs all jerky and even with the graphics options turned to high it still looks 'naff'.

I believe the weak part of my system to be the processor and and looking into upgrading it to something like a AMD Phenom II X4 955. What im struggling to work out is, will a cpu alone fix the problem or should i be just upgrading everything/more parts?

If I was to replace everything i was looking at:

AMD Phenom II X4 955
8GB DDR3 1333
Gigabyte GA-MA78LMT-US2H 760G Socket AM3 Motherboard
Kingston 64GB SSD

Is the graphics card decent enough still or is that also holding it back?

Lots of questions there but hope you can help!
Thanks

Have no idea what board you have now, so I dont know if it supports the 955 or not?

The 9800GT was a good card in its time, but kinda aged now.

If you do upgrade.

Get DDR3 1600. For the price difference its a better deal.

Get a more updated chipset board. 800 series chipset with a AM3+ socket if possible.

And on the SSD, get a G Skill/OCZ/Corsair/Crucial or Mushkin

Sorry Bad comment did not see that you have DDR2 Memory ATM.
So I would say getting a new PC with a cheap Athlon Quad and AM3+ board.
And if budget is a problem then not changing your GPU for now but you can upgrade later.
;)

Also which PSU do you have??

Thanks for the reply. Ive changed the hdd to a 60GB OCZ and 1600 memory. Im looking at motherboards now. When you say 800 series chipset, do you mean any board which is 8**?

Such as:

880G
890FX
870...

Right. If you can with a AM3+ socket. Like these.

Or if it will be a few weeks, more of the true AM3+ boards will be out with the 900 series chipsets.
