new desktop help

i tried searching for my answer but couldnt find the answer, i apologize in advance if this is a repost.

basically im looking to get a new desktop. i havent purchased a new one in 10 years, ive simply replaced the old hardware in my current one as needed, but as you can imagine, its time for a new one.

i dont play games on it, most of the time im using the internet and excel, and watching sporting events (ie MLB tv). the only thing i must have is more than 1 monitor. i current run a dual monitor display, but would not be opposed to running 3 (as seen on tv in govt command centers). also i would like to be able to run coax to my computer to watch cable, im not sure if that is through the video card or not.

i wouldnt be opposed to building my own, as long as i can find well written directions and be able to figure out how to wire it. but i wouldnt have a clue on exactly what hardware to order.

besides from building my own, can anyone recommend a good/cheap site to buy a customizable system. i bought my old one off of cyberpowerpc.com from a tech savvy friends recommendation.

and does anyone have any suggestions on hardware that i should avoid or buy? stuff like buy at least X GB RAM, or dont buy an nvidia video card....

thanks for any help

i5 750 or i7 860. Depends on if you want to spend extra $80. It still within budget if you get i7 860

daisy, thank a lot, this is exactly the type of info i was looking for.

im a pretty smart guy, pretty mechanically inclined, but by no means a EET. with that being said, is assembling the components in the tower hard, or should i be able to figure it out. there seems to be a lot of info out there just not sure how relevant any of it is bc i dont know what exactly to look for, in directions.

on a side note, when i got my current computer in 2000, i remember ordering a 40 GB hard drive and being like what the heck am i going to need 40 gigs for???

i can remember friends getting desktops with 2 hard drives, 1 for OS files, and 1 for most everything else, in case their system crashed or became infected they would have to worry about messing with windows. is that something ppl still do, or something thats even necessary. would it be any different than partitioning off ~20 GB and dedicating the partition for OS files?

You can read the post How to Build a Computer - Step by Step (With Photos)
But I do recommend install CPU + Heatsink before srew it to the case.
The user mannal should tell you where the cable going to connect.
While for partition, for win7, I do recommend you allow 50GB for OS and program partition. Win7 take something like 25 - 30GB as far as I remember
