New desktop upgrades

Hi. I just got a dell precision 1500. I want to do a few upgrades to it. First thing I want to do though is buy a new case for it. What Im trying to figure out and haven't been able to is do I buy as ATX full mid micro atx? Also what are some good upgrades for this setup. I know I need to upgrade the RAM but other than that I am open to ideas. I don't have a very large budget but I do want to spend where its needed.

Why not build off the bat instead of paying twice for prebuilt parts you'll replace anyway?

Depends if the precision is a btx or atx machine. If its a btx then you can't change the case.

This is what I'm trying to figure out. I've searched. One thing showed it was an atx. But that's all it said. I typed in numbers off the motherboard itself. Came back as dell and also a few said Alienware.

Easiest way to find out is if access to the motherboard is on the left side or the right side of the case as your looking at it from the front. If its on the left side then its an ATX, if its on the right side then its a BTX. Also be careful sometimes Dell uses proprietary psu's on their machines and also the front usb and power connector are usually in one big connector instead of separated like a retail case would be. The connector would be your biggest issue.

Ok. So could I upgrade the motherboard and processor and still use my other components? I want to upgrade my ram as well.

Also what do I look for with those plugs to tell if I'd have issues. Sorry. The furthest I've went when upgrading anything is installing a graphics card and a HD. So anything internal pc I kinda need a tutorial on lol. Trying to learn as I go

At that point, you are basically building a new machine anyway. What will you be using this machine for? The precision is mainly used for cad and business work. You wouldn't even be able to game using the video card they come with as its usually a different type of connection.

Gaming mainly. I don't do a lot but I'd like it to be able to keep up. Something like call of duty black ops

It was a very bad decision in getting this machine. Do you know what processor it has in it? You really should start from scratch. You'll need a decent video card, power supply, and processor to play that game and any game like that.

Start from scratch. Don't try to turn this into a gaming machine. At the least it has a C2Q and the most, some Xeon processor.

I got this pc for free. Was just seeing if it was worth it or not. I will probably sell this one and my ps4 and fund a new build from scratch

Processor is the i5.

There are hundreds i5 processors out. What model exactly?

We really need to know exactly what parts are inside if you want help "upgrading" that machine. Perhaps you can manage with another case, better PSU, more RAM, SSD and new video card.

Eh, if you look at the spec sheet for the T1500 it lists i5/i7. It looks like the Lynnfield line on 1156 though, so he doesn't have a particularly viable CPU upgrade path.
I was thinking more of the T3400. Similar cases with slight changes.
