New desktop?

My Mom has needed a new desktop for, years. I only have $500 for this and I was wondering what is a good buy if anyone has any suggestions on any or if I could build her one with my budget, I don't know much about hardware. :confused:
 
 
I've heard that at the lower price ranges you're just as well, if not better, off buying a prebuilt. I would start looking at what's going to be on sale at Microcenter, Frye's, Bestbuy, Walmart, etc. the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday).

If she needs monitor keyboard/mouse too then I would definetly suggest looking at prebuilts. At $500 you probably can't build anything better than what you can buy in stores.
 
You can get an Asus with decent specs, refurbished, from Bestbuy for $400. I'd do a little research on buying refurb, but from what I've heard it usually sounds OK. Again, there will be some deals coming up around Thanksgiving.
 
Well, she is usually just surfing I think but I don't know everything she might do. I agree with not building one looks like a bit too much of anything that she will ever need.
