Hi, soon I'll be gettin a new desktop, but theres a few things i dont know. like what company is good to buy from because ive looked at acer's,dells,hp's,and gateway's.. which of those are most reliable? also what is the intel or amd stuff all about if somone could tell me whats the latest or best that be sweet... or should i just build a new one? I can spend a max of $700

thanks...

You could build a decent desktop pc with $700.

+1
i would never buy a PC i dont care if its alien or not. building your own PC gives you info and what all jobs are going to require in the future. hell when i was a kid i started to tinker with things and yea ive killed some systems. but anymore its really easy and simple. here is a small thing that will build you a nice PC thats updated

$90 AMD 64 3500
$80 Asus socket 939 mother board (or any)
$35 DVD rom
$10 A: drive (floppy drive)
$35 for a case
$80 sata 250 gig hard drive
$100 XFX 7600 video card
$35 power suply
$100 1 gig of ram
$120 monitor

see you can upgrade for a few more $ or down grade. but one things for sure. you build it you can upgrade it easy! now if you buy a cheapo stock dell then you might just have problems. ive seen to many dells take a poo after a year. ive never bought a named brand PC in my life. ive worked on about 70 of them. i would have to say the worst system is a E-machine. YUCK! 2nd comes in Dell. just build one and give yourself some pride :)

What Ruffy laid out is a nice system. What do you want to be able to do with this desktop? If you are not into gaming and more into multi tasking then look at some dual core options. I do agree that you should look into building one your self. Getting a pre built machine will give you a bunch of software bundled with it that you will never use.

Core 2 Duo is a definate must, its the standard nowadays, here you go:

CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005 - $191.00

RAM – http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145539 - $109.99

Mobo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813138037 - $104.99

GPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127201 - $96.99

HDD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822144415 - $52.99

Case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811119068 - $49.99

PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817182017 - $54.99

Burner - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827136059

Total - $677

you just need a OS, which will put you over budget a little, and upgrade to 2 gigs of RAM as soon as you can. Core 2 Duo is needed, its the best. You can also choose a geforce 7600 instead

reviews arent anything, havent you spent enough time on here to know that. 54% 5 eggs is great, asus boards have 40s and stuff, reviews dont mean everything. look at the specs and respect the company.

and the build i just posted is great. lets see you do better

jose. nice combo but you didnt add a monitor. thats the $$$ right there. that will bring him to 800$ but it isnt a bad combo

a must if he doesnt want to buy another computer in a year...it fits in the budget, and it carries the tag as the best CPU nowadays

very true. not a must. ive had my 64 3500 sence they first came out. and it still doesnt lag one bit. even though it is a single core it runs top notch. still running my 3500 till my new stuff comes monday. boy i hate the wait knowing that i payed for stuff and didnt get it yet :(

well the max i can go is $700, but a few questions, I had a dell 8400 that broke on me(which is why im getting a new pc) could i take the hardrive, ram, drivers, pci chips and all the cards and would they be compatible with everything eles...? that way i could save a lot of money..

o and whats an os?

an OS is the operating system ex. Windows Home Edition or whatever...
If you tell us what kind of stuff you pull out I am sure one of us here will respond back to it and will tell you if it would work together :)

If your old computer broke then there could be some components in there that are broken and won't work in the new system at all. But, you could take the cd drives and hard drives and put them in the new system to see if those are still good. When you say your old one is broken, do you mean that it doesn't run very good or that it wont turn on at all?

well my mobo and power supply was broke according to aardvark, and they wanted to charge us $500 for it so I said screw that, ill build my own... so basically i just want to get a new motherboard(thats mostly for gaming) a powersuply(dont really know what the good ones are), a flatscreen(dont know which are good) and a new case... But i have a disk drivers, hardrive, ram, pci chips, soundcard, videocard, wireless card, and a few other cards I dont know what they are... will they work with any motherboard and ps I buy? also, what is a good mobo for gaming, and what are the good companies I chould buy the other stuff from?

thanks...

Do you happen to know what kind of ram you have from your old system? and if the graphics card is AGP or PCI express? Before you look at getting a new motherboard you need to find those things out so you can get one that will be compatible with those components. How old was the system before it failed? and was it top of the line at the time? these answers may make it easier for us to help you out. Chances are the CD drives will work with any motherboard you buy, along with the other cards besides the video card as long as you have enough pci slots to support them all

*2.what are the funky PCI chips?
*3.Which is a mobo and processer thats good for gaming AMD or Intel?
*4.if i switch to AMD will my stuff be compatible with it? besides the mobo of course.
*5.will my hardrive work when I use it with the new mobo/psu i choose? or will I have to clean it of all its files?
