New DSL modem

I have a silly question. I'm very computer ignorant, so feel free to chuckle.

When you hook up a new dsl modem to your computer, what all do you have to do to make it work? Do you have to call your dsl provider and get it configured to your computer? I'm using SBC Yahoo! DSL but I am temporarily on dial up until I get a new modem.

Additionally, how do I know if I am buying the right modem for my computer/connection? Are they all the same? (I am going to try and find the exact one that I already have to make sure it's correct, but just in case I can't find one.)

Any info would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

First thing to do is turn it on and plug both the phone cord and ethernet cords in.If you have good sync..no red lights then I would make sure your computer can see your modem. Go to start>run>type in cmd to get the dos prompt and type in ipconfig. If you see an ip address and other info your in good shape. I could tell you how to set it up from there but it's rather lengthy, Just call the # that came with the sbcyahoomodem and tell them you don't want to use the disc and they will walk you through it. Takes about 20 min. They don't charge you for the call. Hope this helps.:)
