ok, so i gotta few new external hard drives, hooked them up to my computer and what happens is that the computer picks up that something has being connected up mto the usb port as it displays the little icon on the bottom right of the screen as it always does with usbs, yet the hard drive will not display on the my computer screen beside the c drive. i'm puzzled. anybody know how ican solve my problem and actually access the drive. i'm informed that there reliable drives(there model is western digital)

did you build these external drives yourself? if so, make sure that the drives are all jumpered correctly to master. install the drivers from the cd provided by the drive manufacturer. i'm not sure how your desktop is configured and what OS you're running. you may have to go to computer manager and see if they're listed. you say they're new... did you partition and format the drives? if not, i don't think that you can do that thru the usb.

Right click on my computer, go to manage, disk management, and see if the drive's listed there. if so, right click on it and assign a drive letter to the partition. Or, if the drive's new, you might also have to partition and format it.

cheers for the replies.

how can i format and partition it. i mean its not like i can go to the my computer menu and right click on the drive and select from the options.

throw in your windows cd...

oh wait. you may not be able to format it that way. i had to install the hd into my computer in place of my hd and then boot your system with your windows cd.

if you still don't understand it, box your desktop back up and send it back to the manufacturer. not everyone should have a computer.

Hmm which version of windows are you using? I formatted and partitioned my 2 external "drives" as was explained above.
