New family pc build??

I am thinking about building a new family pc and I am looking for suggestions. With some help from a friend I've put together a system, I think. Will be basic home PC for internet, email and photo/home video editing/burning. Don't do any gaming now, but can't be ruled out with 2 kids.
Budget is $1200 max but under 1k preferably. Also, if I could find a comparable, or better, prebuilt system that comes with a warranty, I would consider. Although, I"m interested in giving this a try. Anyway, here's what I've put together. You experts, please critique and advise. Thanks!

I would think about possibly another mobo. This isn't a guarentee however, E8400 intel dual core has had some problems pairing with the mobo you listed. Also You might want to get a really good graphics card. If theirs a possibility of gaming, i would upgrade now, even with video editing. That's what I do my self. Radeon 4850 HD isn't bad but isn't very compatible with your mobo its been known to have problems.

I could be wrong but other then that its a solid build. What about a 64 bit vista? So you could increase ram if you ever wanted to?

Hitachi isn't bad, but I'd get a Western Digital hard drive. :)

Also, while MSI is a good brand, I wouldn't get a mobo with a three-star rating. ;)

I also suggest going up the Vista 64-Bit. 1) It supports more RAM and 2) it's $5 less.

I have an MSI board in the current rig I'm on and while I've had no problems with it, I also don't like it. I prefer ASUS or ABIT myself.

What about the 4870 card or do you suggest something else?

Will check it out, thanks

I wasn't sure the difference in 32 vs 64 bit but will go for the 64, thanks.

I was a little skepitical on the MOBO. Can you guys point me to one that is reputable that is compatible?
Also, what brands are recommended on the video card?
Finally, is that CPU sufficient for my needs?

Anybody else?
I really want to get moving on this and need any help I can get. Still curious about another mobo and making sure everything will work together.

Ok thanks for those recs. I'll try to put it together on newegg and repost to see if it looks OK for further review.

you need a better case with a better PSU than 350W and a bigger one for better cooling, and i would say got with a quad. the q6600 has same benchmarks regarding games and much better benchmarks regrading things such as editing photos/videos. Also it costs pretty much the same. for the mobo i d say get a decent 'gigabyte' motherboard. Otherwise it s a pretty good build

RAM: that Kingston RAM with CAS 6, which is slow, you'd better get a faster one

Case: It a bit of personal taste...
Some popular ones are -
Antec Nine Hundreds
Antec Three Hundreds
Cooler Master Centurion 5
Cooler Master 690
NZXT Apollo

As I said, I've struggled a bit on the case. I tried a comparision of the Cooler Master Centurion 5 models and the one I had listed above. The only difference that I could tell was a 80mm fan. Also, the one I had lists 2 usb's on the front where apparently some of the centurions only have 1?? Except for the CAS-TO5 WW which is $20 more. I know it's just $20 bucks but I'm still trying to stay under $1000 and have a keyboard, mouse and some software to go. I'll keep checking the others out also.

After further inspection,I see that 2 USB's on the front seems to be standard. I thought that was weird, but it's just the way they had it written out on the spec sheets. So how about the Centurion 5CAC TO5 UW? That one is the same price.

i'd go with the q6600 or even the q9400 for a little more and get a aftermarket cooler for 30-40 bucks and overclock it. would be better than the c2d

If your'e going for a 4870 i would suggest a higher watt PSU. That psu is great but you would want more for future upgrades and your system is abit power hungry. Id say get the Corsair 620w PSU or something close. But other than that thats a awesome rig. Nice job!

Sounds good, I really didn't know how much I needed in the PSU. I'm nervous doing this the first time but I've learned a ton on these forums!
