New Gamer... any game suggestions?

Hello,

Over the next week I'll be building my first rig. I've never gamed so titles like Crysis and Medal of Honor are new to me (actually, Doom and Myst would be new to me). I'm seeing Crysis and the MoH Bundle for under $20 on e-bay.

My main interest in gaming is to get familiar with the industry as I pursue a career in Entertainment Art, so I'll look for different genres (including titles for younger audiences) as well as for the less expensive back titles.

I'm half way 'tongue in cheek' as I call it research though, as I don't mind just getting my hands on a good game and blowing some stuff up. Anyway, just posting to see what games people might suggest.

Thanks,
-Bill

battlefield bad company 2, mass effect 1 and 2, assassin's creed 1 and 2 (mostly 2 though), crysis warhead and the upcoming crysis 2, half life, dead space (scary as HELL), grid, dirt 2, bioshock, borderlands, call of duty series, hitman 4 (AWESOME GAME), and tom clancy's splinter cell conviction are ones i'd check out (take your pick :P).

starcraft is my favorite game ever and they just released the sequel starcraft 2. I will be picking it up as soon as money allows

don't ever play WOW. It is the heroin of the internet.

Thx you guys, and I'll try to lay off the WoW. ;)

Mass Effect 2 caught my eye, I grew up on Starwars, but ME2 seems to be in the same genre only with better reviews than the current Starwars titles. I know that Knights of the Old Republic was popular, but I've seen gameplay and don't know that I'd stay with it. The trailers from KotOR do look amazing though.

As my interest in getting into gaming is related to pursuing entertainment art, and game studios are easier to get into than Pixar (a lot more of them), I'll be looking to get my feet wet with different genres including some games for younger audiences. That way I can call my gaming 'research' ;)

The visuals in Dirt 2 look really impressive. Is that the power of DirectX 11, and are there any more DX 11 titles out or coming soon? My 5870 (w/ i7-930) apparently handles OC'ing through voltage control and I wouldn't mind seeing what it's capable of.

Mass Effect 1 sounds like a good call and I'm sure I can get it cheap by now and work my way up to ME2. Starcraft 1 might fall in the same category.

I've seen Unigine Heaven footage, and the visuals are interesting, but I don't know what it's about.Any thoughts on titles for younger audiences?

Thanks,
Bill

transformers war for cybertron, although it isn't exactly a kids game (not violent, but it is nevertheless aimed towards young adults). lego harry potter got a good review from ign.

mass effect 1 and 2 are both excellent games. i don't really care for open play games but i LOVED mass effect 2.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 and Knights Of The Old Republic are awesome games. Same with Jade Empire, really enjoyed that one.

Thx you guys.

Joh, I imagine I'll give the Lego titles a go. I know there are Starwars titles there also. When I feel like doing some 'Grown Up' gaming I'll look to your list for that also. As a comic book fan, Batman Arkham will be hard to resist for very long as well.

JL, I'll check out Jade Empire, thank you ;)

Is there anyway to to rent PC games? I took a look at Gamefly, which would be perfect, but they seem to stick to consoles :(

Batman or Jade?

Any way to rent these things? I don't think we have any video stores in the area any more, though I'd have to check again to be sure.

P.S. I just E-Bay'd Mass Effect... it has begun... :P

i meant batman. one of the best movie-to-game adaptations.

you wont find anyone who rents games for pc, because of the whole serial number thing

i would reccomend getting a steam account, they have games on sale quite often and you can snag them for about $5-15

Ganzey, ty... you just saved me however much time I would have spent looking. I've picked up Mass Effect and Medal of Honor Airborne so far from Ebay with some pretty friendly prices, and I know I'll find Crysis at a low price.

I hope that actually playing the games is as cool as deciding on components and looking for the games.

I'll check out Steam. Thx for the tip.

lol, it definitely is.

what setup do you have right now?

I'm currently in between Mass Effect 2 and Starcraft 2, both really great games. But I suggest you play the first of each title if your really want a great gaming experience. Back to Starcraft I go.

Well Joh, since you asked about the system

... this is what I'll build next week, some of this is still in the mail, including the card... and I've been getting parts here and there for a while so sometimes what I paid is different than newegg's current price. I could have spent more, I guess, on the RAM and the board but I'm looking forward to trying out the 930 and the 5870. The Monitor is a 24" Samsung T240 with decent bookshelf Logitech speakers. Except for the expensive card it was built as a workstation... the card is for fun :D

i7-930: $215 (Microcenter)

Antec 902 with Seagate 500GB 7200 HD: $135 (Newegg Combo)

6GB Corsair 1600 RAM $135 (Newegg)

GA UD3r : $200 (NewEgg)

Sony Optiarc DVD : $20 (Newegg)

Venomous X Heatsink with Fan : $65 (ZipZoomFly)

Asus eah5870v2 : $406 (EWiz)

PC P&C Silencer 750 : $80 recertified (SVC.com)

Some of the components could have been higher priced but it ought to get me started in pretty decent style, right? I've seen the cards core clock OC'd (Voltage Tweak)from 850 to 1000(or more?) with the benchmarks getting a minimum of 40 FPS in Crysis... If I find myself needing more than that then it's time to find another hobby.

Oh... and I've been chipping away at the parts list for 3 months now... can you tell I'm excited about it? :)

Thx You Guys,
-Bill

Nice build, that's a good price for the CPU, I went from a Dual Core to the system in my sig., massive difference. Just be wary about the mobo, I've had a couple of Gigabyte boards go for no apparent reason after a year and a half, but I also hear the same for Asus boards which is the one I have now. None the less, you will be happy with that rig. And Crysis is still one of the toughest games to run flawlessly to date with really good hardware, so don't judge your video card by one game, it's a great card. Are you running Windows 7?

that should totally allow you to have pretty high settings in crysis (depending on the resolution probably gamer with no AA). love the case ;) :P be sure to cut the side window to get a full view of the components (that's what i did).

that cpu should be awesome for gta iv (pretty cpu intensive).

down the road, another 5870 or even a 5970 would be a killer :P unless they come out with a better single by then

If you get a Steam account, check out the Valve Complete Pack. It's $100, but you get 22 full games including the entire Half Life series, Counter Strike (original & Source), Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat: Source, Portal, and a few other games, all of which are awesome and will keep you busy for quite a while. If you're looking for examples of good games, look there first.

JL... I will be running Win7, yes. On Crysis, because I know it's still considered one of the standards as far as benchmarking from games, I'm looking forward to seeing how the build will handle it. The review I saw said 40 fps second minimum (60+ avg.) when that card is oc'd, though I know that cards will vary, even individual cards of the same model. If it does work out that that 40 fps is my minimum on crysis, then I know the card will blow me away on that game and everything else. I honestly haven't played games since well before Joh was alive, since I was a little kid with an Atari 2600, so BFBC2, or something... oh geeze.

The price and reviews on the GA MoBo were to good to pass up, but I can see where I may want to upgrade eventually. Have you had the 920 for very long, and did you enjoy building around the Asus any more than building around Gigabyte?

Joh, yeah, I noticed your sig... congratulations on going with the right case ;) I have a pretty good hunch you could link to some pics of your rig to let me see what you did? With the window I'd like to think that with a dremel and some new plexiglass I could pull it off... but first things first as I've never even built, so we'll see how that goes. It would be nice to get the side-window-fan-bracket off of that window and out of the way of the larger heatsink. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing what these cards look like in that case.

I feel like a 5850 would have been overkill... so let me enjoy feeling like a stud with my 5870 before you start in with the upgrades OK? I haven't even gotten it yet and you're talking upgrades... Oh Geeze... :P

I'll be building next week, I expect. Would it be bad etiquette around here to start a thread with some pics in the Desktop forum? I know that I'll have some questions about what to do with the thing once I get it built.

Thx You Guys,
-Bill

Drenlin, that sounds like a great tip. I'm glad you let me know about that before I bought any of those titles individually. I'm off work till the end of this year, probably... so my Hobby is about to switch from reading about components to playing the games. Something like that sounds perfect.

Thank You,
-Bill
