Nothing outside the tower matters. This comes out to be $1585. It's supposed to be a gaming build, so the maximum amount of money will be spent on resources. My worries are the power supply not being able to handle the card. Also, if I were to go with a lower chip whether or not it would start affecting the GPU's performance. And I didn't see any complications with the motherboard and the CPU not working together. Any suggestions to make this cheaper or better would be appreciated. The goal is to get the most graphical ability out of it, and have it be QUIET! Can't stand the jet engine video cards, lol.

Also looking for a gaming laptop:

GIGABYTE P35Xv4-BW2 Laptop 5th Generation Intel Core i7 5700HQ (2.70 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD 128 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 15.6" Windows 8.1 - 1849.99

The rationale here is I need both, and the more performance per dollar I can cheapen my desktop to, the better laptop I can get which isn't as easily customized, at least by me. Any help at all would be great. Thanks!

Jack

It's been a few years since I've built a computer, so ignorance of what that is would be the main reason. Looks like an Intel CPU model?

The cpu you listed will not work on the motherboard. You have a socket 1150 processor going on a socket 1151 motherboard, it won't work. If you want the speed comparison of the one you picked you'll need this one.

You would also need DDR4 memory not DDR3

And I just noticed that the motherboard you picked is a mini ITX, you don't want that as its only for smaller itx cases. You want a standard ATX board.

Also would go with the 850 EVO 250gb drive as it would be cheaper then the 840 EVO.

So it seems your whole list needs to be redone.

I'll do a list here for you shortly.

What do you have for an operating system?

Just going to use win7. Maybe win10 later if it's still free and worth using. For the most part, I'm trying to pull together a build and then wait it out at least 2 weeks to see what black friday deals come up online. Are the skylake chips ones that actually make a performance difference? I was under the impression that CPUs were highly pointless other than OS operations and not preventing the GPU from doing it's job by being slow. These are touted as getting more performance out of video cards, though. As far as games, I've always been concerned about getting a good SSD to run loading heavy games and the OS from, a decent amount of memory to make things smooth in general, and then putting all my money into the most insane vs overly costly video card / PSU to power it. Are there any other points of failure to look at?

PS- Thanks for the redone list. I wasn't sure about mine at all.

Do you already own an unused copy of windows 7? You can't reuse the same license. As far as the difference between video cards and processors, one can bottleneck the other. You are spending a decent amount of money on this machine, you will want a good processor as well.

I'm not sure about the case though and how good of cooling it has.

OS is not an issue other than if the software were to somehow limit the hardware. I know at one point I had a DX10 video card which couldn't be taken advantage of due to my version of windows. I'm not sure if any similar problems exist with using win7 over win10.

Right, I guess I'm trying to boil it down to where I'll have to cut corners, if I do. Ideally, I could make this system work (the gaming desktop, not this specific build) at around $1200, but it just depends on the deals I can get. I don't know if I'll have to set a specific price to cut off at. The way it's looking, the only way to drive down the price is get a crappier GPU or CPU, and I don't know which will lower my resources more. I'd obviously point towards the GPU first for cranking out graphical rendering capability. But like you say, a shitty CPU could drag down a really good GPU that I spent a lot of money on. The skyline CPU is interesting though, I have a feeling I'll at least want to get one to see how it performs, as long as it's getting decent reviews, and not coming DOA out of the box on a constant basis.

I've been trying to look for a reliable benchmark site, speaking in fps terms. Is there much of a decrease in performance from 980ti to 980?

Well, this is about the best I could come up with with the black friday sales. I think it's still pretty decent. However, that skylake chip, I hope, makes a difference, as it is jacking up the price through the roof. Any more suggestions would be very appreciated!

Also you'd want DDR4 instead.

Any reason you are limiting yourself to ITX only boards?

No reason, just looking for nice reviews and a board that won't die on me. Is there a motherboard you'd suggest for DDR3 memory since I want to keep costs down. One that will work with the skyline CPU?

Yes 650 will be plenty for that gpu. Especially as even the new intel skylake chips are so energy efficient. I would get a corsair rm 650w or cx series same wattage. Or xfx...or evga....:)

Skylake will not work with DDR3 ram. You are only talking about $15 more for DDR4 ram anyway.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231888

And you don't want an ITX motherboard as it won't work in your case.

Oh. Well, I suppose the cost is minimal. I guess the question is which motherboard can I get to fit in which case, and if it can use DDR4. Would something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130886 work for that?
