I'm building my new rig (when I get all the parts) and I'm not sure what card to get, I was thinking of an XFX 8600 GT 512 but it seems to have disappeared from where I was looking so I would have to go with something else...anyone got any suggestions? hopefully not spending more than £70 on it... but open to ideas.

My suggestion:

www.tomshardware.com

Provides charts comparing hundreds of graphics cards.

Do a bit of research ;)

ok I've done a little hunting, cant really afford any 8800's but does anyone know how the 9600GSO 512MB compares with others? e.g. where it would fit in in the "scale" on tomshardware?

One thing to consider when upgrading is your current rig. Assuming it is the "main rig" in your sig, your system will heavily bottleneck any new card you get.

For example, I had a 3800+ X2 & 2GB RAM.

I had a 7800GT, then upgraded to an 8800GTX.

The upgrade wasn't very substantial AT ALL.

So remember, a new graphics card can only help so much...

anyway, the question was: cant really afford any 8800's but does anyone know how the 9600GSO 512MB compares with others? e.g. where it would fit in in the "scale" on tomshardware?

well, im using the 9600gt. i think its just below the 8800. i can max out all games except crysis and gta 4, maybe because im running on 1280x1024 (max that i can go).

well I have a 1920 x 1080 screen... but I think the best game I have graphically is doom 3, any ideas if it could cope with that? I suppose it doesnt always need to be at that res
