i was thinking of a major CPU, GPU, and cooling upgrade for my rig.
which card for PCIExpress 16x should i get?
i currently have an ATi Radeon X700 Pro
i was thinkin of a ATi HD2600

HD2600 series are bad performer

According to those reviews, even 8600GT beats HD2600XT (GDDR4 version) in many cases

You can get 7900GS instead, it is a good performer and it very cheap now

I would not purchase the 7900GS, it will fast be outdated in the world of dx10, IMO the 2600XT DDR4 model is your best bet for future proofing on a budget. The true potential of the ATI's 2xxx series will be realized shortly..

The 7900GS is crap, the only reason why people think it is good is because it is a 7900, but it really is just a scaled back, dumbed down version of the true 7900 series cards which perform quite well but are much more pricey.

the 7900 gs is not crap, and it's not because people see that it's 79xx series that they think it's good. It's raw performance, for mainstream gamers, for a decent price. I bought mine for about 130 dollars canadian and i can pretty much run any game pretty smooth at like 1280x1024.

Of course the people who have them won't admit its garbage...

But compared to the other options, they are...

7900GS can easily beat HD2600XT GDDR4, and it cost just as much as the GDDR3 version.

And HD2600XT is not powerful enough to run DX10 games smoothly, even 8800GTS struggles in DX10.

I don't think that extra memory will make any big difference

I would get the 256MB version

The 7900GS isnt crap, most will overclock to a 7900GT speeds but without 4 pipelines. If he wants a pretty good cheap card 100-170 bucks the 8600GTS is a good card, something like this and it will beat the crap out of a 7900GS

Both 7900GS and 7900GT have similar speeds at stock. The only difference is that 7900GT has 4 extra pipelines and 1 extra vertex shader

8600GTS cost $50 more, and it is barely faster than 7900GS
