New graphics board

Hello! I thought I'd ask for some advice for improving my current build as its graphics board is not suited for gaming. The thing is, I bought an HP desktop (M9564.SC) as I could not build the rig myself due to certain factors. It has served me well so far, but most new games that I'd like to play are so graphic-intensive that the graphics board is simply not powerful enough to run them to my liking. So I'm thinking about getting a new one...

Some specs:

AMD Phenom™ X3 8650 at 2,3 GHz
8192 MB DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce™ GT130 756MB

I'm running Vista 64-bit. It's a heavy OS, but my PC can handle it pretty well. I don't think I need to change anything other than the graphics board right now. The thing is, it's not a gaming card... I hear it's much more suitable for other types of programs. The processor is alright for gaming. It could be better but I'm satisfied with the way it is right now.

well what is ur budget. if its low I would say a 5770 or 5830 is the way to go. if its high then a 5850 or 5870 would be good too. Before you get the new card however I would advise that u overclock ur cpu. that will help a lot and boost performance immensely. that will also alleviate any bottlenecks u might get when u upgrade

Being a HP its probably got a pretty crapy Power Supply, unless you have replaced it. What price range are you looking at and does it have the stock power supply.

Ignore the above post, other then maybe the 5770. I doubt very much a 5830/5850/5870 would even fit in your case.

what is ur problem?? I gave good advice. Look the 5870 is a stretch I'll give u that but the HP case is not that small. The hard drive bays are tiny and so if he puts the card in a lower slot it can run UNDER the cage and fit perfectly.

None of that gibberish was good advice, except the 5770. which that would even be a stretch for his power supply (300W OEM) or even fit in lenght. Even if he changed his power supply, those cards (execpt maybe the 5770) overpower his system. His system is under spec. for those cards

and you need to shut up. I know exactly what I am talking about. Check my post again. So I forgot about the damn psu upgrade. I would have gotten to that. If he gets a bigger psu he WILL be able to run any card he wants aside from the 5970 which is just too big. I am not talking crap and if you have not noticed I almost ALWAYS give great advice. You should hop off dude.

The case is by no means suitable for gaming as it does tend to build up a bit too much heat inside. And yes, the PSU is horrible. I wouldn't even consider overclocking anything inside without installing a proper cooling system and/or getting a better case. Especially when I'm using Vista 64-bit. The clocking software available for it is of questionable quality, I hear. Or moreover it requires more expertise than I currently have. I'd be eager to learn but I haven't got the money to spend on what I would need to get proper results without pointlessly risking the hardware.

The build is obviously not even near being ideal for gaming. But as I did not have to pay much for it and could not build one myself, it was alright. I'm looking for something that will run most games fairly well and has proper software support to back it up. The GT130 has been an... interesting experience.

The GT 130 is somewhere around the 9600GSO/8800GS performance wise. You could look at some smaller PCB 4850/GTS250 or even the 5750/5770. The 5770 would be your best bet. But even then your going to be pushing it with the OEM power supply. Just measure the space you have in the case and find out the length of the card.

Never owned or installed a Club 3D. Dont really know, never read a review on one.

Club 3D are meh, go with Palit or Powercolour pver club3d.

Yes, I meant turning the clocks down. I guess that it wouldn't really be worth it... the power consumption wouldn't go down enough in comparison to performance.

Alright. I think I'll have to think about this a bit more... I might be able to scrounge up some extra money and invest in both a PSU and a GPU. It may take a while, though. But more importantly, thanks a lot for your help! I really appreciate it.
