New graphics card

I've decided to buy the Radeon HD4850 (upgrading from 8500gt) as it looks the best out there for the price. (I'm also hoping it's compatible with my system, what else is req?) I need a new psu to power it I believe.
I know my current psu says something like:
AC input 47/63hz
200-240V-/4.0A
100-127-/8.0A

On the plug is says: 10.0A 250V

I'm not sure it can hack it. I have no idea.

If not would these psu's be compatible with the card?

tell me what the +12v (you may have more than one) are rated at (in amps) on your existing osu. It should say on the label
also how many watts is it

also those sites dont list enough info about the psus. Again, its the +12v current that im interested in.

also you will want a psu with the 6 pin pci-express connector

also bear in mind the HD4850 runs VERY hot - like 65-75 IDLE

Thanks for the help. The psu is 250W which is way below what the card wanted I believe. The +12V = /14A

Does the HD4850 have any coolers or something? Is that hot bad?
 
yeah it a has a cooler alredy on it, those temps are with it lol

those temps are a lot more hot than normal (an 8800 does like 50-60 idle and 60-70 under load)

but the HD4850 seems to be used to it, it runs stable, which is what matters, and seems to be quite happy up until like 90. maybe its just naturally warm.

250w is way too low

lol im surprised that PSU runs your 8500

an 8600 wants at least 18a, but then again the 8600 is in a whole different league from the other lower end cards.

they state that you need a combined (sum of all +12v rails) output of 32A minimum to run the HD4850 on an average machine

a psu with dual +12v at 20a would be fine

go for a 550w psu or above, and ensure that the +12v is enough.

Thanks again for the help, I think the Radeon HD4850 will be fine.

As for coolers I meant not the stock one but separately bought ones, as you said it runs stable at those high temps I doubt it's needed.
 
Well the 4850 has problems with the Catalyst control. Apparently the default fan speed is set at 3%. I don't know how, but I know there is a way to crack it and set the fan speed higher. So temp shouldn't be a problem. And I had the exact same stock PSU running my overclocked 8600GT, not a good idea I guess haha. It ran okay, it's just good know the PSU I have now can actually handle it. FGor a high end card you would definitely need a new PSU. What is your budget I can help you find one.

Aha. Do you have a link to somewhere that can help with the fan issue. As I ordered it today.

600W should future proof it if I want more RAM or maybe an extra HD someday.
 
Good god that PSU is twice as good as mine! Haha you well if you ever wanted to custom build a new computer, maybe SLI two 9800GTX's or something, then that power supply should still hold up. You need 18A on the 12V rail to run a 2400 Pro and that power supply has 72A. Haha a bit overkill but it will definitely work.

Hah, I had no idea. Good to know it's goo though. It better bloody be for that money!
And yes, if I ever want to build a new computer for any reason it should hold up well. :)
 
I don't know how pounds converts to dollars, but if you want me to I can look for a cheaper one on NewEgg.com, one that fits your build. Unless you are serious about using the PSU in another computer. Haha

Yeah, I am. It's around $100 I believe.

Newegg isn't English so if it had to be returned for any issue it'd be a huge hassle. I tend not to buy from far away. Thanks for the offer though.
 
£1 is like $2

but electronics are generally more expensive over here

an XFX 8600GT 256mb costs about £45
