New graphics card

P.I Dragon
Hey guys, I need a new(ish) graphics card, im on a real budget this time, im trying to learn to drive, but cantstay sane without being able to play CSS. So my budget, is a strict £35 GBP (i think thats like $61 USD). I know its real cheap, so im not looking for anything high, not even the nVidia 6 series.

Obviously it has to be better than my current FX5200 128Mb AGP8x. I am limited to only AGP8x, not PCI-e yet, so stick with AGP. I need it to run CSS, cos at the moment i cant, its sooo jerky. I turned everything on low, had no filtering or anything, res was 640x480 and it still jerked about. LMAO!!!

So yeh, £35 MAX. AGP8x. Definately be able to play CSS.... The rest of my rig's in the sig.

Cheers, dragon2309

thanks for that geoff, i will look at them right now, and as for driving, you can only learn to drive when you get your provisional license which is when you turn 17. ive only be 17 for like 5 months, and im quite lazy, but now is the time....!!!!

Anyway, thanks for that suggestion, i was actually checking out the 6200, it seems that the 6200 with turbocache is out of it aswell, cos anything higher than the standard 6200 is on PCI-e the ony 6200 AGP is the basic one, lol

*EDIT* - can anyone vouch for the 6200 geoff linked to, will it be noticeably different in performance to my 5200, can anyone speak from experience on it palying CSS...??

thanks, dragon2309

Well i would imagine that its not like you can play CSS maxed out, because of the budget you gave us. But IMO i think it will run it, however before you buy it, hopefully you will see some reviews from people that do have it and what they think about it.

BTW, does newegg have reviews on it that's helpful to you?

Dont worry, im 19 and cant drive yet. Im waiting for the army to teach me :)

You could try a 9800SE on that comparison site, it did better in almost everything compared to the 6200

EDIT: Although both the 9800SE and 6200 are said to have unlocked pipelines (accordingt o that site also)

i think only some 6200 can unlock, my friend has an EVGA one i think and he couldn't unlock it. Dono bout the 9800SE.

Well, yeh, the 6200 does support SM3.0 and PS3.0, and i cant find any info saying that the 9800SE does any of those, ive found it supports SmartShader2.1, if thats anything like ShaderModel 3.0, i dont know. I dont want to be able to go to 1280x1024 all on full and get 150fps, ya know, seriously 800x600 will do fine on medium, im really not one for extreme resolutions.

So what does everyone think...?? refurb 9800SE or new 6200A, both 128Mb

*EDIT* - i dont know what it is but does SM3 and PS3 actaully help an awful lot.... what does it do.??

i would still like to know whats so great about SM3 and all that stuff, but revelations have taken place, budget is now around £55, if im working it out right that should be like $95 USD.....

So, any more suggestions with the new budget £55, still very strict and very low for graphics card but hey, its all i can afford and i NEED an upgrade, lol

Thanks in advance, dragon2309

i dont see an x800gt on that pge for AGP8x.... am i missing it? also, i would doubt that a x800gt would fit into my prce range, arent they like £90

Wouldn't the Radeon 9800SE be better cause a GF6200 usually has 64-bit memory and the Radeon 9800SE has 128-bit memory.

Yeh it does, but 6200 has SM3.0 and the 9800SE doesnt, but then the 9800SE is a tiny bit faster.

I really need someone to decide for me, LMAO, with a budget of £55

Ok, well, ve been looking and it seems that a much bigger performance jump will come from anything on the 6600 range. The top line 6600gt is out of my price range, so say i stretched to like £65-£70 as a budget, what could i expect then??

You can go for a 256MB 6600, or a 128MB 9800 Pro, or if you keep your eye open on ebay, you can get a 6600GT. These are all the 6600GT's that have sold recently, for under £75. As you can see, there are a few
