Hey fellas! :D

I hope everyone is doing well. I'm new to the site and i didn't come without a problem, i'm hoping you can at least point me in the right direction of fixing.

I Know this is a LONG thread, but i wanted to be detailed. I would have searched, but i dont even know how to describe my problem.

FIRST let me say that im not a computer guru, i dont even know what half of the stuff listed below means. I know the basics, video card, graphics card, power supply, etc. Its alot like working on cars, they just kinda plug in! :)
Operating wise ive taken classes like computer essentials, i can do the basics, install operating programs etc.

A year or so ago, a car friend, on a car forum, helped me build my own computer.

I'm not quite sure of the exact specs, but heres what i do know:

1 .) APEX tu-163 black steel full tower computer case 350w power supply.
2.) POWERCOLOR X1950PRO512MBAC radeon X1950PRO 512MB 265-bit GDDR3 PCI express x16 crossfire supported video card
3.) sunbeam RGPS-450W ATX power supply
4.) AMD athlon 64x2 4200+ windsor 2.2 ghz socket am2 65w process model : ADO4200CUBOX
5.) CORSAIR valueselect 1gb 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) desktop memory model VS1GB667D2
6.) seagate barracuda 7200.9 ST3120B11AS 120GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0 GB/s hard drive
7.) LITE-ON 20X DVD+R DVD burner with 12x DVD-RAM write black SATA model LH-20A1S OEM BK
8.) MB BIOSTAR TFORCE TF520-A2 AM2
9.) 19" WIDESCREEN SAMSUNG 941BW 4ms (GTG) LCD

Woof, that took awhile to type. I apologize if none of this makes sense, because im just reading off the receipts, its been a year or even longer since i bought it.

So I get all of these parts, i put it all together with my dad. Much to my surprise everything works haha.

I'm big into games, i dont own an XBOX 360 or a PS3 because i like using a mouse to shoot people :) . So i was basically trying to build a capable gaming computer on a budget and at first it was mint!

At the time, Crysis and COD 4 were big names, and my computer ran them both fine on the highest graphics settings.

After awhile, my computer starting just shutting itself down in the middle of COD 4. Doesnt say shit, just turns itself off, sometimes in the middle of play, sometimes when i'd quit a server. Because of all of these improper restarted my computer started messing up, being a novice the only thing i could think to do was reinstall windows, and it worked! for awhile.

At one time my computer would not turn on, you'd hit the power button, and in big bold red letters id get "NO POWER SUPPLY" or something of the sort. I go into the tower, look around and notice there is NO power wire running from the power supply to the video card i believe it was. So here i thought i had my problem solved!

Here i am, i've reinstalled windows like 7 times, i dont even bother to save pictures or anything of the such anymore because i reinstall so much. Its gotten to the point now, where games like GTA IV (which i know is a graphics intensive game, but it ran it just fine, for hours, when COD 4 would shut down the comp after 20 mins). But this confuses me, because i would think GTA IV would be more graphics intensive then COD 4 , but it would run GTA IV all day.

Now, even games like NBA 08, which isnt very graphics intensive shut down my comp. I cant play any games, and its why i spent a 1000 dollars making this thing. I'm stuck here, my computer is now basically for the internet, and that sucks. any help would be much appreciated!

So recap, made my own computer, worked fine for a long time, progressively its let me play less and less graphic intensive games (beside GTA IV, but now including GTA IV) to the point where i cant play any of my games. should i just bring it in? Because im in a small town in minnesota and there arent alot of choices, i have Geek Squad, and one small place called Computer Renaissance

So once again, thanks SO much for the help if you can find the time to read this, and forgive my ignorance im still very new to computers.

The first thing I would check is the processor cooler. Processors have a safety function that will shut it down if it hits a certain temp. A friend of mine had the exact same issue.

Do you know what your processor cooler looks like? Open the side of your case and give it a good cleaning job. Blow out any dust that you can. Take your processor cooler and give it a very gentle wiggle. Does it feel like it is not tight on the motherboard? Is it sitting level on the motherboard?

The second thing I would check is the power supply. This could also be a power supply failure. When it fails...your exact problem will happen. When it becomes over heated or over loaded it will shut down. When you clean the computer, make sure you blow out the power supply really good. Unfortunately there is not an easy way to actually test it. The best thing you can do is throw another one in and see what happens.

For about $200 you could put a better power supply, RAM and better graphics card in there. I don't know if you want to spend money for the upgrades but if you want it to perform...it might be a good option.

First thing I would check is CPU temps as well, random shut-offs during intensive programs tend to be a tell-tale sign of dangerously high heat levels. Your GPU may also be hitting higher temps, but at stock clocks, I can't see it being an issue unless your fan is failing or something to that effect. Either way, SpeedFan is your friend.

First off...Welcome...pleased to meet you. I agree with the others. I've had the exact issue several times with different computers. Sometimes it was as simple as forgetting to plug in the CPU fan. Sometimes, if the PC is in a closed desk cabinet, it cannot evacuate the heat fast enough. Either way, sounds like an overheat issue. Make sure all fans are running and good luck.
