Hello everyone, I'm new here and just bought a new computer. Its an eMachines T5212 desktop with the Windows XP Media Center Edition. My question is what should I do to it right after I plug it in and turn it on. I know that I need antivirus, I use AVG free edition on my computer now and it seems to work pretty well, will it be okay for the new computer? Also I think that you have to go online to download it, is that a horrible idea? Or is there a way to just transfer it on a disk or something? Also what kind of setup should I do. Heres what I know...
- Get rid of all demo stuff
- Get rid of the stupid AOL free trial it came with
- Thats about all I know.....
Thanks!! Any help or anything I missed would be greatly appeciated :)

I don't know what kind of restore discs you got, but you had just a widows disc I'd say do a clean install to get rid of all that junk. You probably just got a recovery set which would put all that junk back on it.

You can connect to the internet to get your Antivirus and MS updates just be wary of active x controls and different things IE's going to warn you about. After that you should be set.

The disk that came with the computer is the "Operating System Disk" it has reinstall instructions and stuff on it. What exactly do you mean by do a clean install. I havent even plugged the computer in yet so I really dont know what im doing. :) THANKS

well what he means is that you should reinstall windows, this is because most computers you buy these days come with preinstalled trial software that runs in the background and pulls your computer's performance down. It isn't necessairly a bad thing that your computer comes with this software becasue it makes the computer cheaper for you to buy. If when you boot up the computer there is a bunch of software running in the background i'd simply uninstall it instead of re doing the system mostly because reinstalling an operating system can get complicated if you don't know what you're doing. As was stated before you should be fine to get online to download windows updates and antivirus software just be wary for active x controls.
