New Guy, with some questions

Hey guys, as the title says, I'm new around here. Not my first forum I've been on by far, but for the most part, its the first computer forum I've joined up with. I figured I might as well have a forum for each hobby of mine!

Anyways, I didn't see a new members intro section or anything of the like, but I do come here for knowledgable info regarding desktops, so this section seemed most fitting.

Basically, as things sit now, I have a wonderfully dead desktop. Looks like a dead motherboard or dead CPU to me, and with no way to discern which one is dead without having compatible spares of each(who does anyways?), I figured it'd be best to go with the times and upgrade!

The only thing I plan to use again on this build will probably be the dvd-r drive, the hard drive, and the tower itself(maybe). So it'll be a fairly fresh PC.

What I plan to use it for is mostly Photoshop CS4/Adobe Lightroom 2.0, and alot of gaming. Not the cutting edge, push the rig to the max games like Crysis and the like though. I usually play games that are a few years older( cheaper!). Though, what I'll probably be playing most on this computer will be Final Fantasy XI. I'm not going to be limiting myself to just this game on this computer though.

Now, what I've been thinking about is a build with an e8400 and about 4gb of ddr2 1066 ram...the rest I'm not too sure about. At all.

So what I am asking of you as a community is to help me build a computer that will run those programs smoothly and efficiently as possible, without shooting my budget in the bum.

What I use now for computing is a HP dv6700 laptop, which sports a 1.83ghz core 2 duo, 3gb ram, windows vista, and a 8400m GS graphics card. I would like the desktop to perform a good deal better than this laptop.

Sorry this was long winded, but I figured it would be better than the usual forum trolling posts that are incomprehensible.

Thanks,

Will

The cpu will be great for your games and photoshop programs.
The GPU would be great for those simple/not as demanding games, it can play crysis on mostly high on a good resolution, so it has enough power to run those games on high.
The psu is a little overkill for the system, but atleast you have tons of room to upgrade:)
The case is great, TONS of airflow, i would get another case, not the HP on, because those things are very proprieitary, and aftermarket parts may not fit, w/o modifications to the case.

Thanks alot for putting that together for me mx344! Looks like a damned good build, but I gotta say, I'm a bit of an intel/nvidia fanboy. I don't know why, I guess my family's ingrained it into me or something. So you're going to have to convince me to make that leap of faith to the dark side. lol

As far as your assumption of the case being an HP, you were wrong. The case is some full tower of brand I can't remember. The HP is my laptop that I use now.

@gilw i cant make an intel build for you now as i am on my cell phone but try searching for a thread "trying put something together" there is a good intel quad core build by bodaggit

@mx344 gud build

Hello and Welcome! How about something like this?
You may not be able to use your previous case, as
many OEM pc cases have the I/O panel built into the
case, but take a look at your case and see.

everything looks fine except for the GPU. the 9500gt wont be able to do so well in more demanding games. seeing that he have about 50 bucks left, he could go for a 9600gt. that card could give decent fps in demanding games at high/max settings, on lower res, like 1280x1024.

Ok, I'll update it.

Here's the same system, but went down to a
E7400 2.8GHz CPU, and up to a GTS250 GPU.

haha yah i understand, but the cpu that i posted for you is actually just as good as the e8400, and some other intel 775 quads, for what you are using it for, you won't tell the difference.:)

You could also go for that 9400 someone suggested, but you would just have to cut back on the powersupply and case so you can get an OS, do you have an os?

I think you should downgrade the video card to something like a 9600GT or something, and bump that processor.

This is where the x3 amd build comes into play, it costs almost the same as the e7400(10$more), but it is a Hella lot faster, and can overclock just as good. I would personally go amd just so you can get more performance for your money, it would be a lot better for the photoshop programs you will be running than the 7400.

The only reason i would go intel now, is only for the i7s, to me it seems like amd has taken the mid market over, cause there price per preformance is amazing.:)

Man the O.S just kill you.
The entire budget can make amazing configs but the OS hinders it .
100 bux .
Thnk god i dont have to worry of OS

Man, thanks to all of you for these builds. They all look pretty damned good. mx344, you're starting to sway me already haha.

As far as having an OS, the best on hand I have is XP 32bit, but I also have a copy of good ol' windows 2000 haha. I do want to geet a 64bit though.

Oh also, just to add, I just realized I have an unused set of 2x2gb ddr2 1066 ram that I'd like to use towards this build. So there's $50 out of the equation.

If that's the case, we'll bump 'er back up to the 8400.
