new hard drive for a laptop

Hi All,

I was wondering if someone could a help me. I need to replace my old hard drive a Seagate 5400.2 80GB for an HP laptop.
I looked on Newegg and they are out but they have these:
Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9160314AS 160GB
Does anyone know if this hard drive will be a good replacement? What does the .2 and .6 refer to?

.2 or .6 is a generation number. Larger numbers are newer (and supposedly better) drives.

The 5400.6 ST9160314AS is a SATA drive.
However you did not specify the full model number for the 5400.2, so it can be either SATA or IDE.

Hence, you should find out if your laptop has an IDE or SATA interface and check this.
 
There's no reason to stick with just Seagate. It's a good brand, and probably my preference, but as long as your computer supports the interface (PATA/IDE or SATA) you could use pretty much any drive you']d like.
 
just make sure its the same connection and same size, if you've already pulled out the HDD then the long one with lots of little holes is PATA/IDE and sort connections with L shape is SATA, better yet just google PATA/IDE and SATA for pictures.
