New hard drive problems

Hi, could anyone help me please, I bought a new samsung 1tb hard drive and have put it as my new drive, since putting it in I have had nothing but problems, at first it only recognised it as 8gb and when it finished the format it said it couldn't format successfully, I then tried again and for some reason it shown it as the correct size but when I formatted and the computer restarted it failed to boot and said press control alt delete to restart, I tried again but created a 500gb partition and it worked, xp installed however when xp loaded up it only shows on partition, the second 500gb seems to have vanished, is this something to do with a hardware limit with xp?

Thanks for taking the time to reply people, I have now resolved the problem, I found a free partition manager and removed the unalocated space, I was quite shocked to find a program for free that could do that, maybe it had something to do with sp3 as strangle hold mentioned as I have sp3 installed now

What does Service Pack 3 really add to Windows XP? It seems like I have had a lot of problems with it. There is some update that XP Service Pack 3 has that makes Windows shutdown times take over 30 seconds. I find it highly annoying since I switch between two operating systems and reboot all the time with my desktop computer.
