New HD

So I bought a new internal hd (its a SATA) for my computer cuz I have way too much music, games, and other crap on my current one, and I opened my case, screwed the hd in, plugged it into my mb and psu. So then I turned my computer on and in the lower right corner a balloon popped up and said it found new hardware, and everything was looking good. The balloon first popped up with the name of the drive, then it said it was a disk drive, then the balloons went away and the add hardware icon was gone. It never said anything about the new hardware being installed and ready to use. So I went to add hardware in my control panel and it found it and said the device was working properly. I was unable to "update device driver" however. And even though windows says the device is working properly, it won't show up in my "my computer" so I would appreciate any and all ideas. Thanks.

Right-click on My Computer and go to Manage. Go to Disk Management and see if the drive shows up there. Right click on it and Format (NTFS if you have the option). I forget right off if it assigns a drive letter, but you can rightclick again once it's finished and there should be an assign a drive letter option.

Yes, it needs formatting. If it's a big hard disk, you should get a bootable Partition Magic disk (you need about 2-3 floppy disks) and you can partition it how you want, this means that you can create two drives in My Computer with different sizes.
