New HDD for a laptop.

Hello, colleagues, new user here!

Since my notebook's hard drive is quite obviously dying, I'm looking for a replacement drive. I narrowed my choices down to two, but can't decide between them, so any help would be appreciated.

The first one is a WD Scorpio Black 750GB, 7200RPM, 16MB cache.
The second one is a Seagate SSHD Thin 500GB, 5400RPM, 64MB cache and 8GB SSD.

Now, I'd like the advantages the SSHD brings in system boot and stuff like that, but I'm wondering whether the 7200RPM won't have a bigger effect on gaming, which I do quite a bit of. On the other hand, I'm not sure how will this affect battery life, which is also something I need to consider. Any advice? Thanks :)

Get the wd drive. The 8gb ssd isn't big enough for an OS. A windows install will use anywhere from 15 to 20 gb.

The SSHD will cache stuff on the 8GB portion so it should be faster than a normal hard drive, but not as fast as a true SSD. I personally would just get the 7200RPM drive unless you REALLY care about boot times.

That SSD is too small. Gaming etc will rapidly require more than 8GB. You'll probably find its actually slower.

I wasn't impressed by my SSHD. Ended up replacing it with a real SSD. So much faster! Windows was cached in the 8GB flash so it booted quickly but what's where the speed ended. Everything else ran like it was on a 5400 RPM HDD, so it was actually slower than the 7200 RPM my machine came with. I think I had the same SSHD as the Seagate you're looking at (I now use it as an external hard drive).

You'd be better off just getting a 7200 RPM disk or a proper SSD.
