new hdd not recognized

My father dropped his computer and afterwards the Hard Drive was broken. As far as I could determine the rest of the computer was alright so I bought a replacement hard drive and tried to install windows xp on it.

Everything seemed fine but the install program said it couldn't not detect a hard drive.

The new hdd is a seagate momentus and claims to be compatiable with windows xp.

The new and old drives are both SATA, but the computer is IDE. The old drive had an adapter on it that I removed and put on the new drive.

What can I do?

I am almost positive that the old HDD was broken but I suppose a connection could be lose as well.

Have a look in bios to see if it is detected and as you said it the computer was dropped what more can we say!

When I replace my 80gb sata hard drive with the new wd 500gb hd in my Gateway MX6214 Laptop, my XP can't recognize the 500gb drive, I think is the driver issue. When I install Windows 7 on it, it doesn't give any problem at all.

If the laptop is running in AHCI mode, thats why the xp installer can't find the hard drive. See if you can change the sata controller setting in the bios to IDE so the installer can see the drive. If there is no setting to change then you'll have to slipstream the sata driver into a new install cd.
