HELP....New and First Intel build

first off==== thanks for all the help, sorry about multiple similiar threads, just unsure, and want to make a good decision=== completely new to building, and have only built amd x1. Just don't want to regret a decision on a purchase or setup later....

building a new pc, first intel pc. I want to build a computer to handle gamming with ease and run media programs to home theater connected thru windows media dlna

I have most componets however i need to decide on a mobo and memory, budgeted 400. This is what i have decided to buy so far. I am a bit confused with the x38/x48 vs nvidia chipset- not sure which is better.

1)wolfdale 8500 or 8400
2)vista 32bit or 64bit ultimate


I was going to use these from previous computer
1)evga 8800gt x2 512mb
2)wd raptor 150gb
3)coolermaster 750psu
4)zalman 9700
Any thoughts suggestions???? plan to buy from newegg.

Don't get this one, as it is an IDE hard drive. Make sure the hard drive you are getting is Sata 2.0 (or 300), not IDE.
 
400 for just ram, and mobo.

I have the harddrive, gpu, case, psu,------wd 150raptor, evga 8800gt 512 x2, nxt black line, 750wt coolermaster............

just need to pick ram, mobo.

previous build had sli with amd, ansus mobo,,,,, this time with intel should i do the same?????

400.00 is just for mobo, and ram.......... was hoping for ram above ddr 2 800, is that posible---
 
mobo looks great the gigabite, and the ram looks good too. not familiar with the ram manufacturer........ PBDR, would you have recomedation for a sli setup....... currently have 2 evga 512 8800gt------------------or do you recommend ditching the sli setup and go with single card----------(i am open to this idea, just try if you can to tell me why)

Sorry, I didn't see that you are looking at SLI, so that board is probably out...

I like gigabyte baords right now for the dynamic energy saver feature and my ep35c is up and running real well.

I went with the A-DATA RAM for price. I think they are a new company, but I'm having good results in my setup.

I chose DDR2 800 with CAS 4 over a higher mHz because, based on my limited knowledge, the higher speed memory generally have higher latency as well and this leads to roughly the same speed overall. The DDR2 800 is cheaper so I went with that.
 
so you would recommend gigabit over any???

PB, you would recommend ditch the sli setup an go with the gigabite???? i liked the mobo because it was ddr 1200, and ddr3 capable---- isthere a mobo you would recomend with sli??? do you like evga boards----
 
I don't have much experience with SLI, so I don't want to overstate. I have heard that some think it is overrated, obviously 2 of the same card would be better than one however, but how much....

One thing, your 8800 cards are not DX 10 capable. That may hamper you in the future. For now it should be OK. If you do choose not to go th SLI route, you can save some money on the board (SLI boards tend to be more expensive) and get a DX 10 card later (maybe a 9800 or 4870).

For now, I would bet that an E8400 set-up with some fast RAM and a single 8800 gt will handle most current games at mid to high settings, if not better.

I like the gigabyte board, but don't have experience with EVGA (I have used ASUS and gigabyte), that isn't to say they aren't good.
 
so what do you think about this board-----

8800 gt is not scalable--- i didn't know that, what do you think about this board, also gigabite,

8800gt IS scalable but ONLY on an nvidia based board, any intel based chipset ex: x35, x38, x48. is only crossfire, you can still use a single 8800gt on an intel board, look at the evga 750i ftw board, thats got 2 16x slots, and look at cellshock memory(ddr2 goes up to 1066mhz i think), one site i know of that sells cellshock is tankguys.com and the 8800gt is DX10 compatible, but only on windows vista os

That board your looking at there just so you know will support crossfire (2 ati cards) so it will not do sli so you will be able to only run one of your 8800's.
If you want to go that route that is a very nice chipset and a great board from what I've heard.
And your card is Direct x10 compatible so if you use vista it will take advantage of that and so will newer games like bioshock.

It may be good, but it's also VERY pricey. $150 for 2 gb of DDR2 800?

You can get 4 gb with the same latency for $80 - $90....
 
everyone seems to like ddr 800, why

why not use ddr2 1200, or even ddr 1000, why does everyone like ddr2 800. is g-skil, or ocz good memory, and what does the latency mean?? see timming like 4 4 4 4 16?????

all on new egg. can you use lower rated memory in a mobo that will take higher memory, I.e mobo will take ddr2 1200, and put in ddr2 800
 
ok so input needed for one more mobo?

how about this mobo- comparing to the one listed above-pbdr recommended this one----- I am kind of leaning toward the first however this one minus the firewire,an only 1 pci 16 but it does have ddr3 capabilities, and is power saving, a little cheaper.- is it worth it?
