One helpful thing to remember as a laptop owner is to make sure you protect your files just as you would for a desktop (or perhaps even more so). I travel with my laptop a lot, so because I recently started checking it in when flying, I knew I needed something to protect my files when it was out of my possession. I started using StompSoft's Digital Vaulthttp://www.stompsoft.com/digital-vault.html so that no one in baggage can access anything in case they got curious. I have also started using the Portable Vault for my USB drives. It's a good idea to get into a good habit from the start with backing up files, security/virus protection, etc.

Look into the Acer lineup. They have some decent models in that price range that will do exactly what you want.
