New Laptop; To Do List

Hi all,

Just got a new laptop which cost me £900. It's a Toshiba with 512mb ,3.2 p4, 40 gig harddrive and windows xp. Just put that in as it may help you solve my question. Basically I want to know if there is anyhting I should be doing to it. Such as updating the drivers for the graphics cards, norton antivirus updates and whatever else you recommend.

You could try goin to the websites of the components and see if newer drivers are available, and don't forget to update windows and get Windows XP Service Pack 2 if you need to. Most of the time new comps have drivers installed, but updating them never hurts. And i agree about getting a firwall and antivirus/antispyware program. It can help a lot. I've heard that within 4 minutes of being on the internet without a firewall your PC can become infected with all sorts of junk.
 
take care of it...try and shut it off at night...helps keep it in tip top shape...doesn't make it work as long and hard...makes it last longer...most updates should be done...if not jst go to windows update in start menu...and schedule updates for norton....then you should be fine

I disagree with that, it doesn't matter if you leave your machine on, i think it's the shutting down/booting back up is of more damage. but it might wiegh on the power bill. my machine has been running for years now, i never really turn it off. seems to be running to notch for me still.
 
well the shutting off will help save your hdd because that saves it from running for continous hours for no reason....means also you won't be on a internet connection that could download trojans and viruses and such...make your monitor last longer if your turning it off too...saves money on power bill...doesn't allow computer to stay hot...elongates life of computer...
 
if you have your computer properly configured (hard drive automatically spins down and monitor automatically turns off after a certain amount of time) then you shouldn't have any issues.
 
i just think of it as a used car...the less miles that are on it and the better you take care of it...the longer it will last...would you rather buy one of the same two cars but one has 200,000 miles on it and the other has 50,000 miles..both driven just the same....which would you choose?....
 
nothing apart from the overheads eg electricity etc yeah do what the peron in here said get more ram it will increase your performance allot!!!
