Hello,
I am currently trying to decide on a laptop for college. I would mostly be doing web browsing and basic apps. I would also like to do some gaming if possible but not high end by any means.
I am trying to figure out whether to go 64 bit, or with a duo core, or both even? This is in order to make it as future proof as possible...
I would appreciate any thoughts..

and thanks for your time

If you're doing basic tasks, all you need is a basic computer. If I had a choice between 64-bit or duo core, I'd take the duo core. Acer's got a few affordable ones. in december, you'll see some 64-bit duos trickle out. But I still would jump into 64-bit until 64bit OS become more widely used.

I was wondering what about heat issues with a duo core and say turion 64 bit plus battery life?
Would u happen to know whats better for each of these cases?

The core duo has very good battery life, it only has around 31Watts of thermal dissapation, which means that it runs cooler and uses less power. Battery life depends on the other hardware, as well as the battery type.

I've read a few reviews, and Acer has a laptop that has 3.5 hours of life with an 8-cell, and dell gets around 3 hours with a 6 cell.

If you get Centrino, it also provides great battery life.

As far as i have noticed Dell seems to rip you off on upgrades... Plus i really would like to avoid integrated video... but i do not need a really nice gaming video card
Anyone got any ideas of places to order from?

Turion 64's are great processors (As I was typing this I am so tired I put "Turion 64's are great cards" lol) No but they are good performing processors, then again The duo core is probably the best mobile processor out there in my opinion, I'm not too sure...although in the end I would probably go with Turion 64, you could even get a pentium M, they are still great processors.

Affordable...512MB for somewhat gaming, Not bad hard drive size for a laptop, and integrated graphics that could probably run games like WoW.

Since you want to avoid integrated video if you could...I would use newegg.

Having a really nice video card will increase price, heat, and use up more battery too. But of course its great to have if you're gaming. :D

Vista...will be a resource hog. I won't buy it for a while...until I have at least 2GB of RAM, I have tested out build 5308 I believe...it is ok. They are doing good so far for the amount of time they have been coding it.

See some screenshots here:

hmm.. thats interesting...
does look pretty good so far though. Sounds as though it wont be mainstream for a year or two?

Ic.. i was just factoring in the time until 2 gigs is a little more common to the average/ slightly above average consumer

I could definitely be wrong tho...
