Hello every one.I have been lurking for about a year or so but decided to become a member. For a birth day gift I got some parts to build a new computer.I need some help as I have never done this before. This is what I got.

cpu:core i7 920
mother board:Asus p6t
hard drive: western digital caviar 640gb
opi drives:Asus dvd burners
memory:ocz gold ddr3 1600 3x2gb
power supply: ocz modxstream-pro 700 watt
gpu: Sapphire hd 3870 (not to sure how good this is)
os:vista ultimate sp1 64-bit
case: thermaltake armor plus full tower (a little over kill I think)
monitor:Acer h213h 21.5" full hd 1080p (max 1920x1080)

Not to bad for a gift from some one who knows nothing about computors. Thanks mom.
I dove right in and started building.I ran in to some problems with the wireing.
I can not figure out how to hook up the fans. They have four pin plugs but the mother board only takes three pins. Then the gpu I found a plug that is separt from the power supply that plugs in to the gpu but is way to short to plug in to the power supply.I really need some help. Thanks for any and all help.

The fans plug into the molex connector from the power supply. Your GPU takes a PCI-E six pin power cable. Your power supply is modular. Just find the right cable, plug it into the power supply, then plug the other end into the video card. If you're doing that and the cable is too short, you can get an extention cable, al though I find it hard to believe it won't reach, unless you're routing the cables behind the case, or you have your power supply mounted to the top of your case.

mep is pretty much correct but I want to add some info about the fans.

A fan with 4 big pins is molex as he said but some fans have 4 small pins that are the same size as the ones on the motherboard, in that case they will work fine in the 3 pin headers.

That's right. You can plug the 4 pin connections into the 3 pin connections on the mobo. Good call gamer. In fact, that's exactly how I usually do it and I'm not sure how I missed that. :P

Thank you.I just found the right cable for the gpu.
I do have the big four pin connecter so I will just plug those in.I hope I do it right.I can post some pics if that will help.

Well, it might be better if you plug the fans into the mobo. Then you can monitor the speeds in the BIOS and use software programs to control the speeds. If you use the molex connectors, they'll work and run properly, but your computer will not recognize them. Does that make sense?

That does make sense.I want to be able to monitor my fans.I really should have done a bit more research before starting my build.I have been reading every thing I can find for the last few months but that was not nearly enough.

It's all good. You'll learn as you go. Continue to ask questions and stay involved in the forums. :)

Thank you.I will be on this forum quit a bit.I work from home so I end up with a lot of time to spend on the computer.I try to learn as much stuff as I can and this place has a lot of great info.

Read the announcements at the top of each sub forum. That's where all our guides are placed. Many are currently outdated, but they'll be updated soon, hopefully. :P
