New Monitor

G'day I'm in the market for a new LCD Monitor since my old 15" Just isn't cutting it plus I can't lug my 42" Down to uni... Sooo new monitor =D

I was thinking a nice HDMI Hi-Def monitor around the 18-20 size.
I have around 100-250NZ to spend on this screen =]
Obviously a cheap screen would be good but I want something
that's going to last the distance.

So ya. Suggestions =] Thanks.

i have the lg l196wtq-bf monitor (it is discontinued but can be found refurbished for around $100) and i have never had a better monitor. anything from lg is great. when you look for a monitor just find one that has a response time of about 5ms or less (even 8ms will do), a refresh rate of around 75 or higher, about 10000:1 contrast ratio or higher (the extremely high ones like 10000000:1 are unnecessary), and, obviously, good reviews from other people/websites. monitors that meet those requirements should easily do the trick. oh, and make sure it has a dvi port or hdmi port on it, depending on whether or not you use hdmi out or dvi out and if you want sound or not.

Mhmm yes a DVI or HDMI port is needed I use HDMI at the moment.
I guess I'll begin searching once I wake up in the afternoon.
Anything around the 18-22" Would be good.

Just wondering what does the contrast ratio in a screen actually effect/mean?

if i remember correctly contrast ratio is the difference between the blackest blacks and the whitest whites. be careful though since most companies use a "dynamic" rating which allows them to advertise a much higher contrast ratio (that and there is no "standard" of measurement). if their rating says "dynamic," know that the "typical" contrast ratio (the one that you actually see) is less. but since companies are so unreliable, you might as well pretty much ignore the contrast ratio and just compare based on the other criteria. contrast ratio is a really sticky area...
