New monitor

This may be the daftest question ever, but I have never done this before so please be kind.

Here's the story. A couple of weeks ago my monitor decided not to come on with the computer. I have to keep turning it on and off until I get a flicker of a picture, then hold the button down to get it to stay there. This happens every morning and is doing my head in.

Somebody gave me a Preview monitor, but when I plugged it in it came up with a message: VGA Mode not supported.

I have no idea what that means.

I have seen some good ones going cheap on Ebay, but what I want to know is can I just plug it in, or will I need to download drivers which I won't be able to do if it doesn't light up.

Or should I try to get a Dell monitor to go with the computer?

Most likely the resolution or refresh rate isn't supported by the monitor. Boot into safe mode and change the default resolution to something the monitor can support. What is the make and model of monitor you have now?

It is a Dell Monitor which came with my Dell computer. My device manager tells me it is a Generic PnP monitor.

Thanks for replying.

No, I'm talking about the preview monitor. What is the make and model of it. It should be either on the front or labeled on a sticker on the back of the monitor.

The Preview one says on the label at the back product no CY-565 Model no 568 It also says it was manufactured in October 2002, so perhaps it is too old?

Ok, the native resolution of that monitor is 1024x768. So you will need to boot into safe mode and then change the screen resolution to 1024x768. Then reboot to normal mode and you'll be good to go. The dell monitor must be bigger than 15"?

To be honest I have no idea what size it is without measuring it. I shall do as you say and try it again. Thanks very much for your help.
