Hi I am buying a new mother board and processor and there is two thing im unsure of the first is what is the difference between socket 939 and 754 ? or will that not matter as i am getting a new processor. The other question is will any graphics card work on any motehr board or do i need a specific one for my ATI radeon 9800?
many thanks chris

754 has slower processors and less features. And obviously, you're new processor must match the socket. Now if you don't plan to upgrade nor get a very fast processor(Athlon or 3200 or lower), there probably won't be much difference between sockets.

You MUST get AGP. Many new boards, espcially 939, use PCIex.

If you want easier upgrading down the road, go with a 939 since newer chips, and the 754 socket cpu's arent being prduced anymore. And as "the other one" said, your card is AGP so if you want to use your existing card make sure to get a AGP motherboard.

Many thanks to you all for your replies i reallly apreciate it i will get a 939 with a agp thanks very much

You are also going to need new RAM because your computer uses SDRAM and any new S754 or S939 motherboards need DDR RAM. New RAM is pretty cheap though. You can buy a gig for around $60

But then you'll also need a new PSU because its 200 W PSU...

Ugh. Upgrading old machines can get complecated.

i had an old 754 motherboard, and an amd 3400+... when i upgraded i decided to get rid of the 9800pro i had as well, because it wasnt worth upgrading to another agp card since theyre really pushing pci-e cards.
basically for your new motherboard get a new processor AND video card if you can afford it. your motherboard will last you much longer that way.

ok thanks what power supply do i need in the case or is it best to get a seperate power supply? and also do i need ddr2 or just ddr memory?
many thanks chris

just DDR. get two sticks, it will run quite like ddr2.
also, for a power supply just get 400watts or more...
unless youre planning something crazy like SLI :)
such questions should be in a new thread!
