New motherboard and processor. I don’t think its running right.

Hey, I just bought a new ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 motherboard and an AMD 64 4000+ San Diego. The motherboard has ULi. My old setup was an AMD 2800+ Barton with a stock Compaq motherboard running 1GB PC3200 ram and an ATi X800XL. I could almost play HL2 E1 at max settings at 1140x900 res. Now, it’s a little faster, but not as fast as I thought it would be. Why do you think I cant see a difference in games? Does a new motherboard and processor not make that much difference in games, or is something not set right.

Current Specs.

Motherboard: ASRock 939Dual-SATA2
CPU: AMD 64 4000+ (with ThermalTake POLO 735 Heatsink idling at about 37C)
GPU: ATi X800XL (AGP 8x) (Fast Write) (256MB GDDR3)
SPU: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
RAM: 1GB PDP Systems PC 3200 DDR400

A new processor "can" make quite a bit of difference, and you should be seeing a difference since you upgraded from a 2800+ to a 4000+.

humm... i can tell a little bit of a difference in windows but not as much as i thought i would. In windows its reading at 2.4. how much L1 and L2 casche should it be showing?

IMO CPU's are quite overrated....You shouldn't see that big of a difference in windows or many games, some games such as F.E.A.R you probally would, since its heavy n the CPU usage at times, If you want to see a inprovment in your games go for 2GB of RAM or a better video card. IMO People overrate CPU's and underrate RAM.

Also, I dont know if you have a single 1GB stick, or 512MBx2, but if its a single 1GB stick, then by upgraded to 2GB of ram you could also run it on dual chanell which should help a bit.

Yeah, i do only have a 1GB sitck. i was planning on getting 2 sets of XMS 1GB DC kit. ( 4 512 sticks running DC). I havent installed FEAR yet, but thats next on the list.

I would just go for getting the same 1GB stick, to get 2GB then getting 4 XMS 512mb, the performace difference will be so slight it weould be better to put th emoney into a VGA savings fund.

CPU and motherboard do make a difference. The thing is that your old MOBO and CPU could handle HL2 just fine because it was your video card that was slowing everything down. Since you just speed up your mobo and CPU you are still being bottlenecked at your video card. A faster CPU does help though when it is slowing you down, but in your case it wasn't.

So just a new motherboard and processor dont make "that" much of a difference in games?
they deal alot with responsiveness. do you notice it not taking practically any time at all when you exit a hard-hitting game? or simply open a window?
because the differance in those two processors is very vast, but your gaming speed generally has to do with your
graphics card

oh yeah, i can see a difference in windows. I was just kinda dissapointed that my games were not that much faster. Another question. My cpu is idling about 38 degrees celsuis and problelly about 40-45 load. i wonder, should i overclock it any? or would it not be worth the risk?

You dont need to. Your video card is bottlenecking your computer, not your CPU.

It depends how old your previous CPU was. For example, I have the same exact hardware now, then I did with my A64 3400+ build, and in my current rig on lowest settings in CSS i get an average of 20-20FPS. With my A64, I got an average of 80FPS on max settings.

There should be a greater difference then what your describing, part of the problem may be the poor performance of your chipset.
