New motherboard, booting problems

Hello,
I just upgraded my motherboard, cpu, and RAM. I am using an IDE HD with the OS on it, an IDE dvd burner, and a SATA HD for storage. Unfortunately, my motherboard only has one IDE port and whenever I boot with the HD and the dvd burner both connected via IDE, it says boot failure and does not progress. If i disconnect the dvd burner, I am able to boot with no problem. How can I fix this without buying a new dvd burner?

Yes you can defntly do this. With IDE devices when you have 2 on the same cable you have to always be careful with jumpers (little pieces of plastic like bridges on metal pins - next to the data and power cord connectors on the back. Usually there are would be 5 pairs of pins and jumper would connect 1 pair). Now if you remove jumpers from both DVD and HDD it should reset both to "Cable Select" in which case motherboard will automatically pick one as Master and the other as Slave. If it does not work try to set jumpers on one as Slave and other as Master, if does not work - reverse them. You can always find diagram for jumper placenemt on the back of the drives.

alright, right now i have it set with the HDD as Force visibility or something like that, to be honest i forgot, i did it late last night. and the dvd drive is set a slave. does it matter which one is slave and which is master? I got the system to boot this way, i installed drivers, restarted the computer, and now the HDD shows up as ulululululululu on ide channel amster 4 and my dvd drive shows up correctly on ide channel 4 slave. i have no other harddrives connected. did the installation of the drivers corrupt the OS or something?

I don't really know what is Force visibility - is it setting in bios? It does not matter which one is slave or master, just make sure that both of them are not set as masters or slaves (check jumpers on the back of the drives). Now with SATA it's different - there are no masters or slaves for SATA, they are all just listed in BIOS like SATA1, SATA2... And you simply select which one you want to be the first bootable device in BIOS

i changed the harddrive to slave and the dvd drive to master, i boot and i get
IDE channel 4 master dvd drive
IDE channel 4 slave : HDSw2r5r5VLATx0' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' Vs60AvMA

did i accident corrupt the drive somehow? after this screen sits for about 2 minutes, it changes to a listing of PCI devices and says "Verifying DMI Pool Data......" and doesnt change from there

It should not be corrupted, jumpers do not do that. try placing that jumper back where it was before, connect it without DVD, see if it will load now.

Alright, i disconnected the dvd drive, changed the jumpers on the harddrive to master (i just realized i can choose 15 or 16 heads with the jumper settings, ive been using 16 heads) and i get
IDE Channel 4 master uhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh

and now im just confused. i set the harddrive to cable select, booted up no problems but the dvd drive wasnt connected. i connected the dvd drive after setting it to cable select as well, now it boots up but does not recognize the harddrive at all but does find the dvd drive (as master)

try removing all jumpers. that should default to cable select. then go into bios and set your cd drive parameters and hdd.
