New Motherboard...

I'm looking to build a new computer with a motherboard that can handle er... 4-8gb ram for gaming. Anyone have any recommendations? And should I get athlon64?

Also.. someone asked me to get a crossfire ready motherboard... how does crossfire work?

4gigs should be more than you'll ever need. currently, intel wipes the floor with AMD. crossfire is like SLI, except with ATI cards. you need an x38/48 chipset to do that. what's your budget?

Not too sure how much I want to speed atm...
but I'd like to know which top of the line motherboard people would recommend
and which one would be the best bang for the buck

I'm going to be using Windows XP SP2/3 possibility of upgrading to vistas in the
future if all the compatibility issues are fixed.

I'm going to be putting together 2 PCs.

Thanks.

There are X38 motherboards that support both DDR2 and DDR3... would it be possible to use them both simultaneously?

Thanks.

No point getting DDR3, to expensive. Better to get DDR2 a lot cheaper and some motherboards don't support the speed of DDR3

but eventually the ddr3 price would go down right?

I heard that there is a patch for a Quad core cpu.. that would make use of the 3rd n 4th
so would a quad core be worth getting?

the price off ddr3 has already dropped a lot but i still don't think its worth getting, but if your looking into the future that may not be such a bad idea.

about the quad core. the new dx10 games will be optimized for quad core. crysis i know is one of those games and unreal tournament 3 is too i think. although if your still using xp it may not utilize all 4 cores. i would recommend the q6600, it's a beast and yet affordable, you could oc that to 3+ ghz on air.

geez, just recommended an intel and i'm an amd fan..... amd needs to get their house in order

Defiantly go for a Quad Core they are the best thing now.

DDR3 prices will go down but it is not worth it at this stage.

so vistas would use all the cores? are the compatibility issues all fixed?

yeah it uses all the cores, even though intel doesn't make a true quad core, more like 2 separate dual cores, and as for compatibility quad cores will work with vista, unless you receive a faulty cpu
