New Notebook

Hey I'm in the market for a new notebook, the thinkpad X300 looks great but its way to expensive so i need some similar, w/out the SSD maybe?

to clarify what I'm looking for is:
1) must be under $1500 (canadian)
2) must be very to ultra portable
3) must have a screen larger then 11 inches
4) it would be nice if it could run some nice GIS (similar to CAD)
5) it would be nice for it to have a fast boot time
6) it would be nice for it to have a large battery life

if anyone could help me find something that would be great

If you want a decent small laptop look at the Dell Latitude D430. It's not massively powerful but the battery lasts for hours. For CAD-ish work it'll struggle like many smaller laptops.

The thing about Thinkpad's and Latitudes are that they have great build quality. That is one reason they are more expensive than say an ideapad or inspiron. You pay for good warranties and usability.

looks like that particular model isnt available in canada

If you can go a little over $1500 cad, I would strongly recommend upgrading the ram to 2.0gb's and the processor to 2.4ghz. That will put it at $1559.

Don't buy a Dell they are heavy, bulky and made with crap parts. If you want a PC I suggest Asus, HP business class, or Toshiba. I have had great experiences with all of them.

However, if I were you I would probably just buy a Macbook and call it a day, but that is just me.

what would you suggest (excluding macbooks)?
also just to add to the first post, it would be great if it used a t8xxx series CPU

Here is what you look at for notebooks, IMO...

1) Mobility - thin, light weight
2) Battery life - low power consuming parts
3) connectivity - the most compatible configuration for wireless connections
4) Cost versus features

More powerful video cards and processors consume more power. Which is why the Core2Duo is such a great processor for a laptop, due to its low power consumptions compared to others. Core 2 Quads consume way too much power and generate too much heat to really be effective mobile processors.

As long as you don't hit high end applications a C2D and 2 gigs of RAM should be plenty for almost any OS and standard application. The rest is personal preferences like size, weight, battery life, etc.

Have you heard of a joke? Apparently not.

Quad core processors provide a substantial amount of performance increase over a core2duo notebook, and some people can take the reduced battery life for performance.

However, the op wants a portable notebook so obviously a quad would not be be good for him because
a. He does not need the performance increase and
b. He needs the batter life.
