New NVidia driver resolution problem

Anyone else having this problem?

I started up Steam (this is not a Steam problem) and it tells me i dont have the latest driver, so i go aha! new drivers! and go to the Nvidia site, i download the latest 162.something? dont remember, and restart. Now, my screen is messed up (my monitor is 1440X900) as the control panel says that i am at 1440x900, and taking a screenshot and looking at the resolution confirms this, but it is not in the right ratio. It is wayyyy too wide, so everything is stretched and looks like crap, and i have to use my mouse to get to the edges for them to show. There are black strips at the top and bottom. I tried to reinstall the old 94.something drivers, and it froze, so i reinstalled the latest and the problem persists. Any help is appreciated.

Did you use NFR (nasty file remover), or similar, to make sure there were no persistant driver files left over that could cause problems? If not download it, uninstall drivers, run the app, and continue to reinstall the drivers.

Are you on Vista?

Same thing happened to me but luckily I just re-installed and it worked just fine.
